C4 ZR-1 vs C5 Z06
Who has owned both? If you could only have one for daily driver, which would it be?

I own both right now; a 1991 ZR1 and a 2004 Z06 Commemorative edition. I think of our relationships as very "European."
The Z06 is the one you are thrilled to come home to everyday. She is comfortable, dependable, you "get" each others humor and she look remarkably good in sweats with her hair in a pony tail. You can build a long term relationship, your tickle fights are always great, she knows your favorite meal and will give you a back rub after a long day. The perfect hot Milf and your friends are jealous as you show her off at the soccer games. The C5 Z06 is Leah Remini.https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&sour...66086721521987
The ZR1 is your mysterious, super hot mistress. She is fiesty, a little dramatic and wears really sexy outfits. The evening is always a little unpredictable but ends satisfying. Not many can understand her and are frankly a little scared of her. When you take her out you are in for a a lot of fun and you miss her when she is gone. She is the one that captures your thoughts in private moment. Your friends are full of envy for your bold move. The C4 ZR1 is Gloria Delgado-Pritchett.
In Europe both women know that the other exists and are never spoken of. Just never let them meet.
Pick your poison; Milf or Mistress?

That’s good! Lol... 😂
I’ve never owned a C5 Z06 so I can’t comment. But I have owned 2 C6 Z51’s and frankly I found them boring.

Ive owned both. 2002 Z06 & 92 ZR-1 at the same time. For a DD, the Z06 is probably the better choice. Easy to get in and out of, looks great (imo), and is a very fast car to boot. ZR-1 is a beast as we all know it to be. Its the same for any car... would a 1966 GTO be a better DD than a 2006 GTO? Probably not.... Would a 1970 Challenger be a better DD than a 2007 Challenger? Probably not... Can all these be fun, cool and interesting to drive, yes. Technology and creature comforts make newer cars hard to resist for everyday use in my humble opinion. Its the same reason most of us wouldn't put our daughter or son in a 1988 Honda Accord, if we had the choice to put them in a 2018 Honda Accord....Newer cars just need to check the oil once a month, and put gas in them...

The C5 is a very capable fast car. Needing minimal maintenance and extremely reliable. Not knocking the C4 at all. Just my opinion.

If you are thinking of adding a more recent Corvette to your stable as a daily driver, I might recommend a look at C7s, particularly the Z06. Prices have naturally been coming down on both the Z51 and Z06 cars (some are, after all, five years old) with the advent of the C8, although lately they have stabilized a bit due to restricted supply of C8s. The non-Z06 cars have 460 HP and the Z06 650 HP. They are extremely comfortable and easy to drive Corvettes, and the acceleration of the Z06 at full song is very impressive (GM claims 0-60 in 2.95 secs.). I have the 8 speed automatic and it is a fine transmission with good paddle shifting for occasional track use and excellent around town shifting in Drive. Asking prices in the low $40s for 2014 Singrays, and into the high $50s and low $60s fro Z06s. A real buyer can undoubtedly get them for less. They will continue to come down over time.Just a little food for thought.--Bob

I’ve had 3 C5 ZO6 the most current is an 02 supercharged with 577HP at the crank. I traded my 93 ZR-1 for this one a few months ago which I’m regretting. I’ve had 10 vettes and without question the ZR-1 was the most enjoyable to drive. The LT5 engine sounds superb and looks amazing. For racing (open road) which I do the ZO6 is much easier to drive fast at the limits. Daily driving, I would agree that the ZO6 is probably better. You can’t go wrong with either and you’ve picked the best of the C5 and C4 IMO. GOOD LUCK!

Comparing my former 94 ZR-1 and current 02 Z06, my 94's ride quality was much better and would've been my preference for a long trip. Seats were much better in the ZR-1, than my Z06. For a daily driver, I would probably choose a ZR-1.
On a twisty road or in a straight line, I would choose my Z06, every time.

The Z06 is the only C5 I’d own and based on comfort alone I’d take the Z06. I don’t own both, just thought I’d throw it out there. But the car to keep between the 2? ZR-1.

I can relate to the C6 being boring, great car but I felt like I was getting into a new Buick. On the other hand I Really enjoy getting into my 95 ZR-1.

Have had both (and more). My full (Vette) history is:
92 LT1 6-spd
01 Z06
92 ZR-1 (ported intake & 4.10s)
03 vert Z51 6-spd
13 GS (stock, blower & upgraded blower)
current: 91 ZR-1 (very modded)
current: 15 Z51 7-spd
If you're specifically looking at C5Z06 vs C4 ZR-1 as an only/daily car, then I'd definitely go C5 Z06. The C5 in general was a HUGE leap forward over the C4, and as much as I love the ZR-1, it's still mainly a C4. The C5 is much easier for entry/egress, better as a daily driver (better wipers, stereo, interior trim, fit/finish, etc). The C4 ZR-1 actually rides a little better, but the C5 Z06 is by no means harsh, and handles better, although at the limit the rear end is more prone to coming loose (if you're doing a "hey ya'll watch this" and turning off traction control & active handling). The C5 is going to be more reliable as well, and also has AC that really works. About the only things you really have to upgrade on the C5 from stock are the headlights (they're horrible, even worse than C4), but that can be done for a few hundred $. To me the C5 Z06 seats also suck, but those can be reasonably upgraded as well if you want.
Obligatory pics of current ZR-1 and previous C5 Z06:

Only drove a C5 Z06 once...Car had just a CAI and a cat back exhaust....
My 91 is modded w cams and ported heads, intake etc.....For daily driving I would choose the Z06..I found the car having a better ride and better chassis feel than the ZR-1....Also felt go kartish which I like due to it being lighter than the ZR-1....Seating position in the Z06 feels more regular carish than the ZR-1..
Would like to see how the C5 Z06 performs with the same work to it as my C4Z......Be interesting..

C5Z responds well to intake/exhaust and cam, but doesn't need the porting work of the LT5. My 01Z I was at I 355RWHP if I remember correctly, and that was with just the zip tied mod (removing top cover from air filter and zip ties to hold filter in) and removing the pre-cats (had pre and main cats). And the 01s were only rated at 385HP flywheel. On top of that with the steeper 1-3 gears and lighter weight, the car felt like a rocket.

Yea, I did a cam, headers, Hi flow cats and Halltech Stinger intake on my MY 02 Z.... it dynod 411/380 to the wheels.... Car was fast as chit.... I miss it... But I have some kind of different love affair with my ZR-1... its a hot rod more so than a Z06....

Thanks guys. I guess daily driver is not the correct term for my driving, but I do drive them frequently (to work and for fun) with some out-of-town trips. I've had several C4 ZR-1s, but never a C5. On my bucket list, but only have garage space for one.

I love my ZR-1, but it's a weekend only car. If you're going to use it frequently, even if it's not a daily driver, I'd go with the C5Z, especially if you have not owned one. The nice thing is the prices on either are pretty much at their bottom, as long as you don't sink a bunch of money for major repairs/mods into one, you should be able to flip it without losing much in a few years.
