[CALLAWAY] higher boost in 4th?????
Ok I got under the car and cranked the boost down tonight. In 1st-3rd gear it hangs around 54hgs....but in 4th the boost still goes to 57-59 hgs.
I got on it one time from 1st and went all the way to 4th and the boost stayed where its supposed to be. But if I started in 4th and squeezed on the gas it would overboost...57-59hgs.
Ideas? I guess I'll drop it some more, but I don't want to lose my 1st-3rd gear, cause they are MONSTERS right now.

There is more of a load on the engine in the higher gears which results in higher EGT's;i.e. more boost.

Re: [CALLAWAY] higher boost in 4th????? (USAZR1)
yea I knew that....but since I can draw 3rd out if I want I figured the wastegates should compensate in 4th too.
So is lowing the boost more the only way to fix this?

I re-read your first post,Josh, and this time I understand better what you are talking about. Seems to me the wastegates should do their job, regardless of what gear you're in.

The wastegate spring's seam to be a-little weak. That's why the overboost in high gear. You can try slightly stronger spring's. Overboost in high gear can lead to many problem's.
Ross's suggestion of an audible and visual knock sensor would be helpful.

Josh, when you adjusted the waste gates, did you do both the same ?
Count the number of threads (on the adjustable stud) showing on each side. Make sure both sides have the same amount of threads showing. More than likely one side is adjusted more than the other.

Hi,
The boost should be the same across the board thru all gears. Check the enrichment injectors and make sure they are working properly. Also call David F and explain to him the problem. You have the number.
Take care,
Stan :seeya :chevy :flag

Re: [CALLAWAY] higher boost in 4th????? (Stan A)
Im gonna go ahead and try turning the boost down some more. I went out and hit it in third again and it boosted higher. I might not have been giving it full spooling time before shifting. Not too sure. Its really hard to keep an eye on the tach and boost gauge at the same time....the car is soooo quiet and runs thru gears FAST. The cats are coming off the car next week, so Im sure Id be adjusting the wastegates again. I'll probably just wait and do it once.

Surf---are you absolutely sure your wastegates are OK? It sure sounds like the overboost problem I had that was caused by a failed wg. I cranked them down until boost pressure was down to normal but that was because all the boost was basically coming from one turbo! It didn't run very smoothly. My mechanic slapped a vacuum gauge on the driver's side wastegate and said it wouldn't hold a vacuum. One wastegate later all is well....

Some advice I saw from an "experienced" contibutor weeks ago was, enjoy what you have got with the CALLAWAY, and you will have fun. Make modifications and expect some complications. SURF/SUN - I will be watching! Mine runs great.
