Shipping a ZR-1
For those of you who have purchased their cars long distance, what companies did you use and how was the experience? Open or enclosed trailer? What did it cost and what was the distance?
Thanks for any input,
Clint

Both companies were very professional and no regrets for either.
The Mecum is in Kissimmee right now, lots of companies that could swing right through Georgia now!

I used Intercity from Ga to Ca.The cost was $2000 plus an extra $200 with the guarantee that once the the car was on the truck it wouldnt be touched, offloaded until it got to me.This was at the upper scale for an enclosed truck but didnt hesitate and would use this company again. When selecting a mover make sure the company you choose is the moving company and not a broker.

I used Reliable to deliver my Z from Annapolis Md to Florence, SC...pretty much a straight shot down I95. Used an enclosed trailer and cost me $600. Driver called me at about 8:30 that morning as he was loading it and the Z was in my driveway before supper. Very pleased!

Thank you for the info, guys. I emailed Intercity,Reliable, and Horseless Carriage yesterday for a quote to deliver the car from Augusta,SC to Wichita Falls,TX,a distance of 1085 miles.
Here's what I have received,so far.
Intercity quoted me $1,495.
Reliable quoted me $1,182.
Horseless has not responded yet but my guess is they will cost the most.
A one-way plane ticket will cost approx $300 and my guess is the car will burn around $200 of fuel to go 1,100 miles. Going this route will allow me to visit with Dennis Scott and George East a little bit & maybe get a ride in Dennis's twin-turbo Viper, before he sells it.
Because of my work schedule right now,I'm only going to have,at most, 72-96 hours to fly out there and drive home. Ol Man Winter might have something to say about it,too. That was my reasoning for thinking about shipping the car, instead. Had hoped to see a shipping quote for less than a grand. Guess that was wishful thinking on my part.

Safety Car
If you drive it home, make sure the spare tire has air, you have the special lug extender key for use w/ the lug wrench on the back wheels, the lock lug key if applicable, and the oil cooler lines aren't leaking.
Some of these cars don't get driven enough and might not like being pressed into service all at once.

One of our CF brethren told me about Carter Specialty Transport out of Austin,TX. I talked to the owner,Jonathan Carter,a few minutes ago and it sounds like I have found my car carrier. He's got new equipment and has lots of experience hauling exotic cars, too. Jonathan is a Marine vet and his wife owns a new ZL1 Camaro. Cool, huh.

Thanks again for your help,Karsten. It is much appreciated.
Jonathan mentioned he's supposed to be taking delivery of a 2014 Chevy crewcab dually w/Duramax this week.

Best advice I can give, is to make sure that lots of pictures are taken as the vehicle is loaded. If any damage occurs during the transport, this will make life easier.
Recently shipped a car to Austria, and good thing I took lots of pictures. The arrived with tiny dents on the roof. Dents that clearly were not in the pictures I took as it was being loaded.

Bought a car from a dealer about 250 miles away in western Pennsylvania.
Car only has 3500 miles, so did not want to drive it to New Jersey, particularly with our recent twice a week snowstorms.
Called all of the major carriers.
Quotes ranged from 800 to 1400.
Times were one week to 30 days.
All quotes were for enclosed transport.
Grabbed Hemmings, and saw 2 ads for somewhat local gentlemen, using pick up trucks and 24 foot enclosed trailers.
I chose Midnight Express for what seems to be being said about the vet in Texas.
The owner drives the truck, loads and unloads the car himself, is a car guy, and in this case a Harley guy as well.
He seemed down to earth, and honest.
Picked up the car from the dealer and delivered it the next day to me.
He charged $550.00!
My point is, while the big guys with their six car rigs, directed by spaceships, drones, or whatever, usually always did a fine job for me.
They cost a lot, and unless you happen to be on a planned route that has an open slot, it is going to take time.
While I will use a big carrier for any future cross country trip, I will check with my small next state over guy first. For a shorter need, I will not hesitate to use the car guy with an enclosed trailer, as I found it to be an economical safe and reliable way to get the job done, without all the bells and whistles of the guys hauling Veyrons and Stutzs to Westworld or Amelia Island.
My guy hauls six bikes out and back to Sturgis for their owners, which is good enough for me.
And your Texas guy is a Vet?
Case closed, hire the man!
Best of luck, and hope yours goes as smoothly as mine!
