Need help from the ZR-1 Brotherhood
No I am not moving!
A very good friend of mine is an NCRS Master Judge, who now specializes
In C-4's.
Over the years he has researched some particular items. His research has been thorough enough that some of his findings have been used to better define certain traits that were unclear.
Along those lines, he is currently researching the use of plastic headlights on our ZR-1's.
While it is commonly held that all 92 and later cars had plastic headlights, there have been some documented occurrences of some earlier cars, perhaps even in the 1990 model year that had the plastic headlights.
He has asked if owners of 90 or 91's could check their lights and provide the following information.
Model year
Plastic or glass
Manufacturer
Unit number ( last. 4 digits of VIN
Unit assembly date if known.
This information may help determine when the actual cutover to the plastic lights took place.
Your responses can simply be replies to this thread for simplicity, and we can all monitor the findings.
H will provide us with a summary of the findings as the data rolls in.
I hope I explained this accurately, and thank each of you in advance for your help with this study.
Pat, the researcher, is a true Corvette guy, who has been active in all areas of the hobby. This dates back to his first new Corvette a 66, that he still has a picture of with him as a young(er) man standing next to his new car with a winning drag race trophy.
He was instrumental in helping me get my modified Z, stock enough to get a Top Flight.
I very much appreciate any help that you can provide!

Same owner for last 10 years, received the car with about 30K miles never replaced the lights, have all service records since 10 k miles, all original hood with the correct date code, and original paint.
Let us know what you come up with

In '92 parts catalog there was a different "capsule assembly" part number that had ZR-1 only applications for MY '90 - '92, that assembly would have been the bucket, sealed beam and the retaining ring. There's no further description of the composition of the sealed beam but I believe you want to get into the '90 production also. There's some very low miler cars out there. The older part #'d assembly shows applications through '92 in that '92 publication.
The ZR-1 application part number was changed late in '92 in SPO records.

My 90 Z has glass. A few years ago Gordon Killibrew was looking at
my car at Mid-America Funfest and commented as to why the
headlights had been changed from the original plastic lights. He said
all 1990 vettes had plastic lights because they were easier on the
headlight motors.

Very helpful!
Anyone with a 90 from unit number 001 through 1754 have plastic?
Hopefully doubtful.
And
Anyone with a 90 with a unit number after 1754 still with glass?
Or Lastly Anyone with a 90 after unit number 1754 with plastic?
Thanks again for your help!

This poll is pretty iffy - 91-1341 has glass now - the original plastic ones are stored on the shelf for any NCRS buyer who cares, however unless the next owner is told, he would assume the car was delivered with glass. My point is that with these cars having changed owners so many times in the last 23 years, memories fade and facts get distorted. My guess is the factory used whatever they had in stock and and there wasn't really any specific date from glass to plastic.

I've given some more thought to the GMSPO part number and I believe you might find no '90 production with plastic but for the sake of convenience when the change was made in the ZR-1 production and the assemblies offered it was much easier to catalog the number as having applications for all years of ZR-1 production at the time rather than separate the '90 from the rest of ZR-1 cataloging. One needs to remember it's GMSPO and not anything to do with "originality" - their concern is the "sale of parts"!
I don't believe you could determine the results as "iffy" from the number of units that are "polled". Maybe miles and "originality" should be of concern when/if there seemed to be a question. Production even in '91 was considered consistent and I would doubt the mix of both but who knows.
If it's a driver they certainly need to be glass "NOW" regardless of originality.
The FSM in '90 referenced NO plastic but only the H6054 lamp BUT in '91 there was reference to both the H6054 (glass) and HP6054 (plastic).
