Default Good Cold Air

Took the car for a drive today with the wife. Ran really well and got me thinking. Seat of the pants was nuts. I've often wondered about power on a cold day.

Had some time after and a great shop here in Chesapeake with some open dyno space. Car was spinning the tires at first so let some air out. A little disappointed with the final SAE #s but correction factor was 0.93. Torque was down a bit but 428/360 SAE. Cool thing was uncorrected: 461/388. That's what I felt.

when I last dynoed at 45 deg the 390 LPE engine picked up 30 rwhp.
ran on the same dyno in spring which confirmed the results

I was really surprised. when you see the pro stock guys run in cool air they really pick up a bunch of MPH and lower the ETs

now if I could just hook up a bit better!

went out in the turbo car today and the turbos REALLY like the cool air too!

According to John Lingenfelter, the LT-5 is even a bit more sensitive to heat, and making power......remember the engine management system on these things is up 23 years old.

They love cool air, which is hard to come by in this part of the country. I've found that 1/4 mile e.t.'s drop about .10 for every 10 degrees F. drop in temp. I think it's mostly due to the timing being held back by the intake air temps.

Is that why those Chicago boys run so quick? Yeah, let's blame it on that.

Yeah, but it's hell getting traction when the temps are below zero!!

That's why they have that little ritual called a "burnout" Paul.
Get those skins boiling and come to the line all goobered up. Even if it don't make 'em stick, it sure is fun.

I really don't know about below zero, but you guys regularly run in temps 30+ deg. F. cooler than us. That's -.30 e.t., and a hell of a lot of car lengths.
Only reason I'm bitter about this is, I used to hammer my car like mad trying to get in the elevens with a stock motor. Couldn't quite do it, but "up north", I think I could've pulled it off
