Reeves Callaway has gone INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Edited for correct spelling of his last name.
No matter what I think of this guy, he deserves to have his name
spelled correctly.)
In the new issue of "Vette" Reeves Callaway is quoted
when speaking of "....automotive disasters of engine design
of all time."
He continued,"And the ZR-1 is certainly one of those.
Talk about an overweight, underperforming pig. The
ZR-1 is a nightmare of complexityfor very little performance."
Mr. Callaway, not only are your family's golf clubs grossly
overpriced bats (opinion), but I think many of us here on this forum
will disagree with your opinion of the ZR-1.

I'm willing to bet VETTE has it on tape or they wouldn't have used the quote. Nothing like a little controversy to sell some magazines.

Hi Bob,
I recently something about what you spoke about here. I cannot find a copy of VETTE any place. Could you or anyone here on the FORUM scan a copy of the article where these statements were made. I would appreciate it greatly.

I'd like to scan and post the entire article,
but I'm afraid I'm not equipped to do that.

It is in the July 02 issue of Vette and Bob correctly quoted what was printed. Needless to say that I was not happy when I read his comments. If you wanted to make a point you could say the same thing about the B2K cars ie. 170lbs heavier than a stock small block and about the same performance as a ZR1. This is not an attack against B2K cars in fact I owned an 87 TT Vette for ten years and a 91ZR1 for two years and I can honestly say that I miss both cars and would like to get them back someday. I am just disappointed with Mr. Callaway's remarks.

Re: Reeves Calloway has gone INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ZR1991)
Keep in mind that the Calloway's were discontinued as an RPO when the ZR1 was in production.
Although I have not seen the quote, it would seem bizzare that a statement such as that would be made considering a lot of Callaway's cars sold off the "Supernatural " platform were based on the ZR1/LT5 chassis/engine.
enjoy.

Although I do not agree with the entire statement as a whole, there is some truth to it.
First, the LT5 is a heavy engine. It is one of many reason's that the LT5 never had a chance of going into a C5.
Second, Lotus tried to design a engine that did have more HP than the original production version. However, there were numerous compromises that GM forced on the Design Engineer's of Lotus that did limit the HP potential of the engine itself. 4" bore center's were one. GM did have packaging problems that they had to deal with but I think they started getting satisfied to offer a 375 hp version when offering a engine with 450 could have been very doable. This is my .0000002 cent's worth.
Like I said I don't agree with the statement but the LT5, as great as I think it is, could have been better from the get go.

Mr. Callaway, need to address this to his TT ZR1 which is capable of over 800 rwhp, something the L98's could never achieve, without going super radical.

If he did say it he is smokin something strong, because this is by far the most impressive car I have ever been in. Usually when someone insults something it is because they are jealous. I can't imagine him saying that tho, but I don't know him. Either way I wouldn't be too worried about it guys, we all know better.

That's why I don't believe the words ever came out of his mouth. Don't believe everything that you hear.

It's a shame that a man that should some day be remembered for his automotive achievements will likely be remembered for having more money than brains....

Re: Reeves Callaway has gone INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (90Callaway)
Who cares what Reeves Callaway has to say,( If its true). His latest published project is with the new Free Lander (Land Rover). He was most likely just jealous that Chev. and Lotus didn't ask him to be a part of the project and his latest visit to his shrink unvealed his hidden anger for not being a part of the one of the greatest productions cars ever made. :D

I like it! If history repeats itself, Callaway cars just may be worth something! Reeves seems to be pissing people off these days. I say Keep UP! Carrol Shelby is one of the biggest SOB picks that ever lived that has shot himself in the foot more times than not and totally forgot who paid his way though life, his customers..... His cars sure dont seem to be hurting in value!

Yep that way he will have some redeemable attribute.....I'll always wonder if when they (tuners and the likes) discredit the LT5 what is the motive. I know for anyone to trash this engine would be like saying all the Cosworth, lmor Lotus engines that ever raced were losers. I can name some over weight winners hemi comes to mind among others.

To 89x2:
Actually, as I said, the Callaway's were discontinued as an RPO with the arrival of the ZR1. It's not personal, but I would easily understand GM's motive.
I don't think the ZR1 will ever effect the value of the Callaway, or vice versa. Anyone owning either has a hellofa car.
About Carroll Shelby, how big an SOB he is depends on who you ask. But you are right about his cars. Even the replicas appreciate in value after the initial hit. And his coupe that he sold for $8700 in '66 (took him 6 months to do it) just sold for $4.25 million. That's part of why he seems sour. Unlike Callaway and others, he did not reap as much of the financial rewards from the legends he created. But that's just the way it was 35 years ago.
Regards,
