Talk me into a ZR1!

Search for a used set of headers.......patience is the key to ZR-1 bargains....also many cars have them already. I do porting for $700, have done about 5 cars so far.

Headers can be found used or new...prices vary accordingly. Yes they are special...as they only fit the LT5.
The rearend is a Dana Super 44...the 4.10 gears (as well as other ratios) from the Viper fit.
As I said earlier...check out Marc Haibeck's website...there is a lot of info about upgrades there. Marc ONLY works on ZR-1s (LT5s)...last time I talked to him.

Intake porting is probably similar. You can have the plenum and IH's ported for about a grand, maybe more or maybe less depending. If you had your TPI plenum and runners and base ported professionally, it would likely be similar. But there are alternatives, you can get cast big-mouth runners and such instead. Or you can take a whack at porting them yourself, and if you jack them up you can buy someone else's take-offs for cheap.
There just isn't much alternative with the ZR-1s is all, because it's a rarer car and a rarer engine. But lots of people have shown it doesn't have to be expensive if you are willing to do stuff yourself.
Most of the rest of the car is standard C4, so parts and prices are what they are, but they're no worse than for any other C4.

Before I bought my ZR, I had started out looking for a C5 Z, preferably Electron Blue with a Mod Red interior. The opportunity came up to drive a 93 ZR and an O2 C5Z back to back. If you are looking for slot car handling and something very quick, the C5 is the way to go.
I was turned off by the chincy feel of the C5 interior and really didn't like the seats. The ZR felt more wrapped around you while I felt I was sitting ON the C5. And then there's the turbine like sound of the
32V DOHC. With headers and exhaust, who needs a radio! Unlike the quickness of the C5, you will find the ZR starts to run away from you at the top. You won't be prepared for the on-going stream of power all the way to top end. This is especially true for a car with ported top end, free breathing exhaust and a good tune. 117-119mph trap speeds are pretty common for those simple mods. The second 1/8 is where the ZR really starts to come into its own and all the way through the end of a full mile it will simply keep accelerating.
I have used this analogy before but a good comparison between the 2 cars is that the C5 is a quarter horse and the ZR-1 is Secretariat.

I currently have 2 ZR1's ( 1 modded and 1 mostly stock ) and an '02'
Z06 that is mostly stock. I will always have a ZR1. I can't say the same
about the Z06, even though it is a very nice car.
If you are looking into buying a ZR1 then buy one already modded. Most
people are lucky to get back 25% of the cost of their mods. In some
cases, even less.
I like the looks on peoples faces when they see the motor of my ZR1.
Most have never seen anything like it. Even some corvette owners don't
know what a ZR1 is.
Parts availibility is good since there are a number of tuners across the
country as well as individuals that also work on ZR1's. Most ZR1 specific
parts can be expensive but, the rest of the car is a C4 corvette.
Good luck with your decision. If you can afford it, keep the Z06 and buy
a ZR1.

On a second note, it is all made worth it because of the great people I have met and I now call goods freinds. My other non car guys freinds don't understand how I have good freinds all because of a Car! It's a Z thing, they'll never understand

Well, we'll see if I get this one. I always start out "oh, I'm just going to leave it the way it is", then it's "oh, I'm just going to put gears in it" , then it's "well geez, how could I pass up that deal on the Darton Sleeved block with aftermarket mains" & so on.

Just an update, I did end up buying a 90 Black on Black ZR-1 wih a LPE 475 Package & Fiske Wheels. I have not seen it in person but am confident in the seller. It's kind of amazing how many low mile cars are out there. I will let you guys know what I think in a few weeks.
