No one knows for sure, but 6000 give or take 500 would be my guess.

Of the 6939 built I would guess 90% are still around. For the ones that were used regularly, the engines are stout end rarely have major failures. Then theres still a ton tucked away in garages that never get used, so those are still in A-1 shape. JMO

Ask phrogs how many he's ripped apart over the years and subtract that from the total number produced.

Just one of those curious questions. Not knowing how many were wrecked, turned into road race cars and so on. I know about 30% of vipers get wiped out on the way home from the dealer.

The ZR-1 Registry has tried to track this over the years, but the truth is only about 10 - 15 % of the owners hang out there. There is no accurate number.

Better question is, how many ZR-1s are put away, and for whatever reason almost never see the road? Mine would be one of those.

I know of two that have not seen the road, one has 7 miles on it, the other has 14, both are 90's. Ether one can be had for around 40 grand.

I won't own a vehicle that is not going to be driven. I understand putting them away for collections but I can't do it. If I own it I am going to drive it.... A lot!

Cars like that don't seem to be that rare, because they pop up here all the time. The problem with them is that nobody want's them because they haven't been driven. Nobody wants a 20 year old car with 500 miles on it.

I'd agree that there are alot of them (under 5000 miles) out there, maybe more than 1000. But they get snapped up pretty quick when they get below $25k. I'd quess fewer than 500 ZR-1's are driven with any regularity (weekly), and less every day. I would imagine that the 90 cars have a far greater attrition rate than the later years, maybe as high as 25%.

" How many ZR1's are left on the road? "

Very few, as most I suspect, are garaged, or in driveways.

Actually the miles aren't super low, it has 10,000 on it. There are a bunch of reasons I dont drive it as much as I'd like to.

I'm **** [I admit it], and won't drive it if its going to get wet or dirty.

The original injectors finally took a dump in May. [minor problem].

My wife is having some health issues lately. [some expenses].

We have twins that are seniors in college. [lots of expences].

God willing my wifes health will improve, one more year twins will graduate. It will be time for a 350 cube, 500 horse package from Mark H. My grandson will have the car someday after my son and I are done with it. Grandson will probebly beat it to death while its raining, I won't care I'll be gone by then.

May be unrelated, but I actually saw a real ZR-1 on the road in Naples today. I can't remember the last time I saw one on the road, other than at big shows like the Gathering or Carlisle.

One thing's for sure, there's more ZR1s then we think that are parked somewhere in someone's garage waiting for those injectors to cloth. But I know that here in Canada we have more and more ZR1's coming out of their long sleep. Some are coming from the USA and others are being sold by their owner's thinking that with the actual green trend it will never go up in value. Mine have 30k on her and I will drive her at the race track against my friends Lotus, Porsches, Vipers and BMW's everytime i'll be able to do so (the Lotus is a much better track car but hey...). My father have 2 ZR1s, his '90 is prep to go solo 1 with 40k and the '93 is bone stock with only 20k, but I probably drove more miles on her then he did!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if there's a future for the ZR1 in the collectible world, it's time to buy one now! If this type of life style will dissapear with the up & coming plug in cars well it's time to buy one and enjoy to my eyes the first ever NA world class sport car!

Sorry to hear about the wife and her issues. Congrats on the senior twins, your big job is nearing completion !

If you were to think like I do you will never regret drivng the wheels off it. As we all know their are plenty of them left to aquire if needed. So, as much as I enjoy my 3rd ZR-1, I have no hesitation should the right opportunity present itself to jump into the next one.
BTW... don't worry about driving it in the rain because these cars clean up real nice ! Since I have the old A/O Engineered forced air setup on mine that means in a downpour my engine is getting a little decarbonization work done on it.

The only investment I bought it for was the thrill of the ride and the song in its heart. It really should be a law that all ZR-1s have long tube headers and custom exhaust... it makes the ride so much better!

In my opinion only ( like you have not heard enough already )
It is unlikely that being a 1 car collector will bring much of a return financially speaking as compared to the void you feel when you see your one and only ZR-1 get sold to a real collector. However, you said you were keeping yours in the family... so, you might as well be the one that drives it before passing it on to the next generation. If they decide to drive your car, well, they might have to invest a little into it to make it road worthy. A small price to pay to drive 24 hour record holding legend.

All the ones I have striped and parted are on the registry website under known totaled ZR-1s.

Now I only add cars that I know are totaled when I see them on auction sites and whenever they pop up.
