Default Repairing your ZR1

I was just woundering how many ZR1 owners dont work on their own vehicles not just their Z's but also their daily driver. The reason Iam asking is because another thread I was reading said that ZR1's are selling really cheap and one reason might be .because their afraid of the cost of having repairs done or not able to do repairs themselves. I would just like to say .I am not a mechanic ,I replace my own brakes ,starters ,belts ,etc. Iam not afraid to tear into the Z if I have to. Even though I dont really want to. My whole point is .their is so much help here that for anyone to want to learn how to do almost any repair can learn by just asking and they will get all the help they need. you can even get step by step instructions. I learned by sometimes making mistakes myself .but thats what it takes .you would really be supprised how easy repairing some things are.

Like any used car nearing 20 years old, you can bet on something sometime needing repair or attention including weatherstrip. Mechanically they are not much different then anything else.

Parts do wear out, planned maintenance is the key and prolongs the need for repairs in most cases.
I do all my own work on everything because it is so hard to find someone I can trust, and I used to be a line mechanic so mechanical assemblys don't scare me.

This forum and the registry have been the best thing to happen to the hobby because of the brotherhood and willingness to help, even total strangers jump in and help.

Have not found a problem yet that couldn't be fixed by just doing it or asking here for advise.

I think a lot of folks sell off their cars because they just want something different, happens a lot when a new model comes out.

Good luck and remember whatever you buy will sooner or later need some kind of work, even new cars break!

Every time something new needs fixing/addressing I'm a little hesitant in the beginning to tackle it. If a ZR-1 owner doesn't have a factory service manual, and they don't use the resources of this forum and the registry it's easy to see why someone would not work on their own car. Some portions can be a bit complicated. Getting in there and fixing little/simple things, gives a car owner the confidence to tackle the harder and more complicated problems later. Your confidence builds every time you can troubleshoot it and then make it right.

Some parts on the ZR-1 are near impossible to find and when you can find them they can be very expensive. I suspect this may be the reason some people get rid of their ZR-1.

If you can find a cheap ZR-1 being sold by someone who is afraid to work on it, I'd jump on it.

I have owned a ZR-1 since 2001 and that same quote is always accociated with someone who has never and will never own a ZR-1 people who write that are themselves scared of the ZR-1 so dont listen to them they are idiots!

Do you think its cheap to work on a LS7? The parts are out there and available but its just like any other euro over head cam engine some parts are expensive, but if you take car of the car 99% of the time it will not give you grief and im talking the motor all the other crap on the car is plain jane C-4 BS I personally am sick of C-4s and I think im done with them had one in the family at least on for the last 14 years.

Its a old car and will have some issues but I wouldnt worry about it if you run into trouble most of us have seen it or been there before.

Actually you may get the wrong idea if you read these forums too much about repairing these engines. You can find every conceivable problem ever had on a lt-5 by reading the posts. In all fairness most people rarely have problems, and the ones they might have are pretty much common and have been answered. Maybe I have been lucky.
This engine is well designed. The secondary system is pretty simple really if you read about it.

That there is just basic maintenance correct? Mine will be like that this week as im needlessly replacing my injectors, coil paks, and wires.
For starters.
This cooler season will also spring a ported plenum/injector housings and long tubes.

Injector replacement.4 days after I got the car back together the alternator took a $hit.Lucky me.While I was in there I replaced the coils and plug wires. It would have been nice to have a new set of ZR-1 wires, not at $400+ a pop. These are OEM at less than $60.

One more thing you might want to take a look at is the belt tensioner, the spring on mine was pretty weak so I replaced it while I had easy access.

A tip for anyone who dont usually work on their engine .If they are afraid of taking something apart or taking something off to replace it . If you have a digital camera take a few pictures as your removeing parts then you can see how things were before you took them apart.

This is something I always do whenever I work on any car especially if its a restoration.

The photos are so helpfully but you could take hundreds and hundreds of photos and then theres always that one spot that you didnt take one and you still have to figure it out haha
