Great project...what class will you going for the record in and what is the current record? Just curious as I watch this project develop.

We're building a 372 to run in the C/GT C=304 -372 CID, GT= unmodified grand touring. ( only thing you can alter is the hood)
Below is the current record holder set with a nascar motor and tunnel ram. probably putting out 800 hp ish at 10,000 rpm. What I call the Brute force method and a tough record to beat at 230.5 mph.

I will be going for a more shall we say sleeker profile! As I intend to focus more on not adding Drag, with the low profile LT5, and really dropping the

car low front and rear.

Loco, when you exclude streetability from the criteria, and add 110-116 octane race fuel, you can get pretty wild with the build.

Dave:

When I was in Bonneville a couple years ago, the guy who owned "Sundowner"(the blue '68 in the background of your photo) was renting the car out for individuals to break 200mph. Wonder if he is still doing that?

Sundowner is a pretty impressive car in it's own right. I remember seeing photos of that car in Hot Rod back in the early 80s. If memory serves it was one of Gale Banks first Twin Turbo cars... I think it's gone 220+, but don't recall the specifics.

Being a closet 'Salt Freak,' I've very much enjoyed reading the progress of your build and will be out there to cheer you on when you try for the record.

Sounds about right, thought that car looked familiar.

Did a little research and it seems the Sundowner Vette went 240.738mph in the summer of 1981.. That's flat amazing!!!!

http://bankspower.com/magazines/show...-turbo-revival

an excerpt:

<<<In ’80, he obliterated that record with the ‘Sundowner’ Corvette piloted by Dwayne McKinney. Banks’ 430 inch, liquid CO2-intercooled twin turbo big block pushed the ‘Vette into the 240s. This was a quantum leap for speed science when others in the class were struggling to hit 200.

“I got a call one day from the chief engineer at Pontiac,” says Banks. “He says, we’ve got wind tunnel results for the new Firebird F body. If you swap out the engine from that Corvette, I’ll guarantee 20 mph more, with no other changes. So I signed the non-disclosure agreement, went on over to GM with my enclosed trailer, and picked up a camouflaged pre-production car.”

At its Bonneville debut in ‘86, it went absolutely ape.>>>

Sorry Dave, didn't mean to hijack, I have loved "Sundowner" for a long time..

Thats ok, ZR, the dam thing went 248 this year at speed week but they couldn't back it up,. Being the owner of a 69 big block, I have felt the front get light at 120 mph. I would have never believed you could control a stingray over 200. But thats what lead will do for you, I talked with the owner, that gray block of lead where the license plate goes is tells a lot. Yes that is an unbelieveable car and has a long history on the salt.

One question for you, what is the degree of the bend of the cage on the support bars that run by the A Pillar right at the dash? I am getting ready to build a World Challenge cage for a race car and would like to get thesame bend in mine instead of running it in front of the dash.

Thanks

Brett

this is the orginal rear section
it would not suport a parachute pull.

This is what we did about it.

all ties back to the cage

for the seat mount

I have 16 sec to get out, I think can do it

Ok the seat and petty bar are in. no tubing is left on the floors so we must be done.

Now all I have to do is build weight buckets for 600 # of lead in the rear and 300# in the front.

plenty of room for fire bottles behind the seat, 10# foam, 10# Halon

You could set the targa top to eject off and the 16 seconds should be plenty of time to climb out the top.

Default Excellent Craftsmanship

Not only is it a very well thought out project, the craftsmanship is outstanding. You do very good work, but I'm sure you must know that by now.

Default 200+ cool

Has your driver driven 200+? That is not something you just go out and do, you apper to preparing well safety wise. I have driven my Open Road Racecar to 206.8mph. So I have some idea on what you are attempting to do, and what can happen. I blew a tire at 204mph:
http://www.boomspeed.com/jeffyvette/Blowout.jpg

I believe I know the guy that holds the record in your class, he also drives a C4 Vette and has hit 232.xxmph.
So what kind of tires are you using?
How much HP are you going to be pushing?
What aero mods are you going with?
Don't get me wrong I am not trying to rain on your parade here, in fact I hope you do all you set out too. I know it took me years and a TON of money to make the 200mph club in open road racing. To do this you race 45 miles up and back, go through the speed trap both directions at 200+, finish the race and attempt to average 170mph for the 90 miles.
I am glad to see you have figured out that weight has little effect on top speed only on acceleration. I can't tell you how many times I have had that arguement with people.
Good Luck,
Jeffy'

I am the Driver, I've been at and arround 200 several times, but not in a vette. I have driven a C4 vette for over 320,000 miles most of it over 100 mph.

Tires are goodyear LSR tires, 4.5 inche wide, 25 in the front 28 in the rear.

no arero mods are allowed. but the car will be lowered 4.5 in.
and carrying about 1000 # of lead.

HP at a density altitude of 7000' is the issue. it will take 550 hp at the rear wheels to make 235. I plan on giving this a wide margin. And I have a air intake idea that I hope will provide boost at speeds over 215.
