I had a set of Dunlops once and they started having tread separation/blow out problems within a month. When they wouldn't replace them, I contacted the regional rep who gave me the same verdict.
Me: So I could take you to court and sue but it would cost me more.
Him: Yep
Me: Since I'm going to have to be ok with that, are you going to be ok with me never buying another Dunlop tire?
Him: Yep
I've never bought another Dunlop tire since and it's been 25 years...I need a company that'll stand behind its' product. I'd rather run on the rims than run Dunlops.

NICE! Anyone else with any experiences. I hate that kinda story, but maybe.......just maybe they have improved recently. Anything is possible!
FWIW, I had a set of Dunlops on my Lexus GS a few years ago. I loved them, great traction and handling. Better than some of the pricier tires I've had on it.
I guarantee you any company of decent size has some jerks in it. Anyway, the SP 8000 is a fairly old tire design. I don't know if they update the design and retain the name, or what.
I had SP 5000's on my '87. They were a decent enough tire, though I was comparing them to ancient Gatorbacks... I would think the Goodyear F1's would be a better choice, but I imagine the Dunlops are a fine tire and probably cheaper.

Cheaper............not so much! $400.00 per tire! Nucking Futs!

They suck!!!!!!!!!!! They're not worth a damn in the rain or when it's dry. You won't hook with them and they are as loud as the Goodyears.
They don't wear worth a damn either! SUCK SUCK SUCK!

IMHO they are a very good tire. They have fairly wide grooves in the
tread which makes them great in the rain. This also provides less tread
on the ground for dry traction.
They ride very good, much better than the Goodyears. The sidewall
is softer than Goodyears so they don't handle as well. Also, they are
fairly quiet on the highway.
If you want a nice riding tire that is good in the rain you will like the
8000.
If you want a performance tire you may not like them.
I've had the same set on 3 C4's and I tried them on a C5 and I liked
them on every car. I have approx. 16 to 18,000 miles on them. There
is about 1/3 of the tread left.
They were OEM on 50% of the E39 BMW M5's, and the other 50% got Pilots. Mine came with the Dunlops, and while they were great in the rain, the dry traction was average. They were quiet, and lasted me 28k miles, though. Replaced them with Pilot Sports...no comparison, but you get what you pay for.

Same here. I only got 12,000 miles out of them and that was only because I couldn't afford(at the time) to buy new tires.
I did do one major burnout with them which wore them down to nothing. I had 6000 miles on them at the time and took them down to the wear bars.
The first pic is what they looked like at the start and the second was 30 seconds later.
I managed 6000 more miles out of them but I was living very dangerously.
Before anyone says, "of course you wore them out due to a burnout", that isn't so.
I have a pair of Michelin Pilot XGT Z4's (best damn tire in the world) that I have done more burnouts on that still have a lot of life left in them.

Thanks for the reply Frank - the way I drive, I'd be lucky to get 2000 miles out of a set of those - I'll get another set of the GS-D3s - thanks guys!
BTW - Sanjay - I'm picking up a E39 M5 very soon - the prices on these cars is just too sweet! What do you think about a nice 2003 version? Anything to watch out for? Thanks buddy!

WHOA! I just read a couple of reports on these particular cars....massive problems!! I'll try to remeber where I saw them but I was shocked as I have always thought they were the premier performance sedan in the world. I think there is a year group from around 2000-2001 to 2005 or 6 that has some serious and very expensive deficiencies.

Hey Dwight, theres some real good info in the April 08 issue of Bimmer magazine (#73) on the 97-03 5 series. It covers the 525 thru the M5 models. Talks about what to look out for in pretty good detail. My wife has a 525 thats been an excellent car so far, but I know repair work can be spendy on them & not too many shops around me to choose from other than the BMW dealer
