Default I'm finally learning to drive this beast!!

I have had my Z a week now, and between everyones help on this site, and the 2k miles I have put on her, I realize what everyone has been saying. This thing is baaadd!! The problem with the shifting from 1st to 2nd was me, its the skip shift. I was shifting to early and it was trying to take me to 4th.

As far as the power, I was wrong!! If I bring her up to 3500 rpm's or so before I shift from say 2nd or 3rd and mash on the go pedal, it feels like the tires are breaking loose. You guys are right, I think it does have more power than my c6 LS2!!

I had it serviced at a local chevy dealer (who said they were familliar with Z's, they weren't, and I will never let a dealer touch her again!!), they put modil 1 10w30 synthetic in her, (I hope thats whats best) and checked all the other fluids. The trans fluid looked clean and full so I would say the whine I wasn't used to is normal.

Anyway, having a ball with her and feel alot better about everything now. I just hope I don't fall to much in love with her and want to sell my poor c6 when I get home!!! ha ha

Thanks for everyones help and WILL see you in BG................Perry

Perry,
Glad you're enjoying the Zee! Since you believe the dealership was not familiar with the ZR-1, I hope you checked the oil level. As you probably know, the LT5 takes a long time to drain back completely. As such, the best time to check it is in the morning after sitting all night. If the dealer filled it to "full" on the dipstick shortly after shutting the engine off, good chance it's overfilled.

Perry,

Mobil 1 is good.

Make sure to check the oil level since most dealerships won't know that the total capacity of the LT5 is 12.5 qts.

They'll drain the oil and then add 5-6 qts like any other "normal" Corvette.

Thats a good point. It may be overfull though. The manual called for 8.6 quarts w/filter and after he cranked it and shut it off, he had to add another quart or so. It sounds like he might of put to much in it right? I will check it in an hour or so, and if its over full I will take it somewhere and drain some out. Will it hurt it to run it overfilled?......................

Another convert to the BOB....I love it.

Re: overfilling the crankcase, you're probably fine if you only overfilled it by a qt and didn't drive it much. I more or less did the same thing when i picked mine up 350 miles from home, then i had to roll it to the walmart svc center to let them drain and fill w/7.5 qts as I nervously paced around the svc bay.

A slight overfill...say a quart or so won't hurt it. Often we overfill by about that much when tracking our cars so as not to oil starve the pickup under hard driving conditions.

I'd check the receipt from the Dealership just to be sure how many quarts they put in.
Congrats on your new purchase.

3500 rpms is a good start. I know it seems unnatural and that you may be breaking something but you got to run it up to 6000 rpms before you shift (or should I say sh*t?) I guess whichever comes first. The cars whole attitude about things changes drastically after 4 grand. Enjoy.

I checked and they put a little over 9.5 quarts. I think I will just leave it as is. The next time, I will be changing it.............

you really should check it after sitting overnight. 9.5 qts is overfilled if they started it, checked and added some more!

Congrats, the more you get to know it the better you will like it! Mine sees 7000 RPM just about every time it is out at least once after it has been warmed up.

My '90 has the 1st to 4th solenoid disabled. I like it that way. I think it is as simple as unplugging, and covering the connections. Experts feel free to chime in.

Dont laugh folks until I started reading this I thought 6K? No way. I tried it on the way to the emissions station to blow out some carbon of course yesterday. Wow was I wrong she was begging for more and had a serious attitude adjustment. I too was shifting at the 2500-3k level. As I was dropping my Z with Bill Bordeau last might I discussed the 6K forum issue which my son to which my 19 year old son who drives a 2002 SS SLP Camaro well duh dad your missing the entire point of the power band. I was so damn shocked and proud at the same moment. The General made both these cars right.
