Default Timing tab

Why does this engine have a timing tab? I'm in the middle of replacing my water pump, and I'm cleaning everything I can in the process.
But....there is no distributor. Nothing is adjustable, is it?
Just curious.
BTW, I'm replacing the thermostat and the serpentine belt while I have it torn apart. Anything else I should be doing? Car has about 80K on it.
Thanks.

It may have been useful for advance troubleshooting at higher rpms. The timing tab was discontinued on the 405 Hp engines.

What about replacing all of the coolant hoses? Would be a good time to replace them and pull the radiator to clean off debris. You've got the coolant drained already and having the radiator out makes replacing hoses easier.

So far the hoses look good. I thought about that. I was a little late on the recent group buy on the ZR1netregistry. But the same thing is on eBay, and the price looks about the same.
I think I am going to pull the radiator. I started on some of the shroud bolts, they are a bear! I pulled the radiator on the '85 I had before this car. The amount of crap that gets caught in there is amazing.
