Default test drive tonight - I've got a question on shifting

Hi - I'm test driving a 91 Zr1 tonight - and the other day I took out an 01 Z06. Both have 6 speeds. (I'm used to a 4+3 transmission so the 6 speed is very different).

I did not use all gears in the z06 but I want to check the ZR1 the right way, so I wonder when it's best to shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc RPM wise.

I didn't love the Z06, and it migth be because I already love the feel of my trusty 88
plus I didn't get through the gears with confidence.

Any input before I drive it would be welcome.

thanks in advance,

Barbara S

I reckon a lot will depend on how hard the owner lets you drive it.

If he/she lets you really get on it, it's just like any other manual car only moreso. Use your ears and listen for when to shift. Just pay close attention in 1st and 2nd as the rev limiter can come on quickly if you're not paying attention. You'll really start to hear and feel things happen around 3500-4000 rpm.

Having owned a 4+3 everything that happens between 2500-4500 rpm happens between 3500-6000 if you're not pushing it. At first it will seem you're not moving much in first gear until you apply pedal then rpm's will come quickly as will speed. Low rpm shifts are not rewarded. Seat of the pants is usually north of 4k in comparison. Best give your self some room and row the gear box briskly and who ever is with ya won't notice till the scenery starts changing rapidly. ZR1's sing in the higher rpm's where the others nose dive. And a simple 4th gear pull or two will bring it all home no fault no harm.

Try downshifting into second at around 60 mph and let her fly. Make sure you shift before the rev limiter comes on.

Take a nice leisurely stroll down some backroad at 40-45mph in 3th gear, check all mirrors, then stuff 'er into second and let 'er have it with both barrels!
Wait 2.6 milliseconds (or whenever you see the shift light come on) then grab thrid and let 'er Rip again!
When you see the shift light again, causally slip it into fourth and coast.

The quickest 40 to 110 you'll ever see.
Gosh, I'm getting all romantic just thinking about it...

Have fun, you'll be amazed by how much the lt5 loves to rev....if you jump on it at low mph or in a curve, make sure you have asr enabled the 1st time so you don't swap ends of the car....might make the owner nervous

No ASR in a 91...started in 1992....besides it's worthless! Who wants a system that prevents you from burning the hides?!?!?!?!

use 1st through 5th, 6th isn't worth it.

don't hammer the car too bad until you get some experience with it.

the zf shifts very well but doesn't tolerate power shifts that are done improperly too well.

I wouldn't hammer 2nd gear too much until you see what kind of rubber it has. the test drive shouldn't end up in a ditch or you just bought a wrecked zr1.

it's pretty ez to have the beast bite your arm off and eat it before you can pull it back.

Test drive - the car was prettier than anything. My 12 year old said buy it as soon as the car cover fell to the floor.

This was a totally stock, low miles car with very few imperfections. The owner does not drive it at night, in rain, or on dirty streets from what I can tell.

It didn't take long to find the gears and have some fun. Being a C4 owner, the sitting position felt like home. I did not drive it too hard, as the owner looked concerned at my standing start test, brake test, and cornering in a parking lot test. The car passed my husbands checks, and I think I am going to try out a C6 before making my final decision.

I might become a ZR1 owner yet.

thanks all for your comments.
