this issue comes up pretty often. it's cost prohibitive for an "unsponsored" individual to do it just for bragging rights.
chevy won't spend the bucks and even back then EDS kicked in some $$$ and it was a pretty grass roots effort and way cheaper.
a c6r or c5r could do the job pretty ez with the right gearing as the durability is clearly there. as could a zr-1 with the right gears and 450 rwhp.
the nardo had 600 ponies and wasn't even close to being a production car.
if anyone wants to step up with a car and very deep pockets you can get a nice piece of paper for your troubles. not much incentive if you ask me.
what would be cool, is several vendors to offer a competition and fund the track/safety rental. like a gamblers race. that would draw some folks out of the wood work similar to the "players run"
it would be a hoot.
