Ime looking to fit rear gears sometime in the future, what is the best and affordable way to go about it and places to buy from,i am handy with the tools and have access to a press and would relish having a go at it myself.
Thanks.

If you want to waste 2-3 gears then go 4:10, I would not go over 3:70 with your setup.

Sorry Tyler, i wasnt clear, ime looking to fit them on my stock 350 91,apparently 4.10's on stock offer an 18% increase in torque and $ for $ is the best upgrade?
I was tracking a DANA 44 4.09 set up on ebay but the sale ended early
All I know is my car with 4.10s goes 160 in 5th at 7000 RPM. It accelerates a lot quicker than prior to the 4.10s. My RWHP is ~400. I have not tried to pull in 6th...I doubt it will go much more in 6th...maybe 165 or so...

make sure you get the super dana 44 "viper gears" with the correct size pinion shaft. the gears are much higher quality (broach face machined gear teeth) and run much quieter due to better tolerances.
they are a bit more pricey but are much stronger and better.
with more power the 4.10s become overkill. On a stock car I think they are great.
I might try the 3.73s someday on my car as I believe they would be a good match. anything under 400 rwhp I think you will enjoy the 4.10s unless you have to hit 180. the 4.10s will max out a bit lower.
One thing that no one ever addresses when changing to 4.10s from stock is the decrease in gas mileage. With ~400RWHP I get ~19.5 MPG AVG between Salt Lake City and Las vegas....yes there are some high speed runs in there. The MPG is verifiable by two cars nearly equally prepared running on the same trip. So...all I am saying is expect a pretty significant decrease in mileage. The added THRILL is worth it though!

i wouldn't attempt installing the gears, you can get some noise if not done properly. i took out gear housing my self and shipped it to marc haibec. he installed 4:10's and i was happy with his work. he charged me around $850 including the gears. i think it's an awesome mod. i really like 5th gear on the higway.

I hit 155 in 5th with 4.10s, and I think I was pretty close to 7000rpm. Would the car have pulled more speed in 6th, or is about 160 all there is with the 4.10s and a basically stock set-up?
what is really needed is to stay with the stock 3.45 and juggle the transmission gears. now that the kits are out there to adapt more modern trannies, a deeper first gear with a .75 6th would be the hot ticket.
the .5 6th gear is pretty useless for anything except a few lousy MPG.

I am looking for 4:10 for my stock 91. I don't understand the loss in gas milage unless you are talking about 75+ MPH. Right now I hardly ever use 6th gear since most highway speed limits are set at 55. It seems the tall gears in the trans would make up for the low gears in the rear at speeds of up to 70 MPH and not effect MPG.
I have a set of 3:92 dana 44 gears here in my garage.
I am not sure if I am going to install them now that I am going the stroker way.
You can borrow them from me and give them a try to see if you like them.
I will only charge you a rental fee of 5 beers per year, but these have to be cold, not warm :-)

Thats an offer i would only be too happy to take you up on Jordi and worth the 5 COLD beers a year rental.
I still have your tools and spare gearbox in my safe keeping, ive also visited Paul Gamsa a couple of times recently and he asked me to inform him when you are over next, many thanks.

If you do this larger viper style 44 gearing, remember you have to grind the inside of the case to compinsate for the larger/thicker ring before you install them.

These were the type i was watching on ebay, thanks for the advice.
Whats the best performing gear for a stock 90 with a chip, air filter and B&B exhaust?
Some of the guys in Texas use to say 4.33's were the best for a stocker with bolt ons. I put them in my car and noticed a positive difference... however, I can't say that it made a difference acceleration wise... One thing for sure, it didn't slow it down any !
The deeper you go rear gear ratio wise, the closer your gears seem to be in the trans... 100 mph in 6th gear is almost 3000 rpm... your gas milage may suffer a bit... mine did...
At the other end of the spectrum is the 3.07 ratio from the early 4+3 cars. Believe it or not, it is a fun gear to play with. It must be the torque factor of the LT5 that makes it so much fun !
7000 rpm in 1st = 66 mph Talk about killer burnouts ! 2nd is 98 3rd is 137 and 4th is 175... 5th is about 182 @ 6000 ft
6th ? well... you can still use it, but it won't do much except improve your milage going downhill with a tailwind...
