Default Planning on changing the oil........

for the first time over the Holidays. I know the '90 reqires 10-w30. I plan on using Amsoil 10w-30 synthetic. I guess the car should sit all night due to the inverted position of the filter. Any other things I should look out for. I don't have any manuals for the car yet. Should I get some before attempting any service? Which ones to get, and where? I found the jacking instructions on the registry. Is there way to get all the oil out in the process, or does some stay in the cooler? Looking for a little advice here.......don't want to do something stupid!

I usually get it up on stands and then let it drain overnight. I know that's overkill but, it's the way I do it. The following morning I reinstall the drain plug, and it usually takes about nine quarts to refill. I believe that about three quarts always remain in the system. I don't think that there is any way to get it all out without pulling apart the cooler and all the lines.

the thread above is good advice; all i will add is when you begin adding oil, stop after about 7 qts, and begin checking the dipstick after allowing time for oil to settle down.
it is much easier to add a quart, then to try and remove it if you overfill.
and bad stuff can happen if overfilled!
if i have a shop do it, i have them do it the same way, and i only let them fill it with the 7, or until the low oil light goes out. i top it off at home after it sits for a few hours. again, much easier to add then to remove.
But, you should have no trouble, even the filter rarely gives probelms with letting loose it's contents, then again i wait a bit, and i use gm black filters.
go forward armed with your skill and common sense and you will be fine,
although you will find absoluetely GREAT TIPS from this site, when you do have a question. (didn't mean mine heh, heh.)
HAVE FUN PLAYING!, THEN HAVE REAL FUN, DRIVING!

I put it on ramps, let it drain for an hour, put the plug back in, refill and enjoy

The fact that the oil filter is inverted does not matter. Just changed mine. Other than the GUSH of oil coming out of the oil pan (careful), no
other problems. Not a drop came out of the oil filter. Engine was warm.

Jim If your anal like me... I suck the cooler down also... One 10 mm bolt on the passenger side between the oil lines. The top line ( both will be exposed ) is the one I run my clear plastic hose into. I slice the hose at a steep angle so it is pointed on the end... When I feed it in and meet resistance at the top before it turns downward I simply twist the hose and it goes around the corner as I push. When it gets to the bottom it will decidedly stop again. Attach the mighty vac and start a siphon into a can. All the oil should be out in an hour or 2. When I refill I can get 10 quarts in... or, about 30% more fresh oil than normal...
MAKE SURE YOU RE-ATTACH THE COOLER LINES CORRECTLY !
Hope that is anal enough for you !
Merry Xmas
Ted

Don't worry about the filter. It will be empty, I think gravity takes care of that! I think that if the car is cold, most, if not all of the engine oil, not counting the oil cooler, will be in the pan. If it is warm then the draining process might take a longer period of time as noted earlier. When you refill, it takes a while for the oil to make its way to the pan, so you should wait a period of time...before assuming that you have the right amount of oil in.

The surge as the oil comes out of the pan is somewhat surprising, but after that, some patience is the best measure.

Do some detailing while you are waiting!!!

I have found to get the most oil out without removing the oil cooler, I lift car with floor jack, remove drain plug, lower car for several hours, lift car up again on one side at the greatest angle my jack will lift, leave at this angle for a couple hours, lower car ( watch how much more oil drains!), let sit for another couple hours, then lift the opposite side of the car to the greatest angle the jack will lift, leave a couple more hours, lower car again (note more oil drains!) and finally replace plug and fill with oil. I would not go to this much effort for any other car, but I love my 94 Admiral Blue!!!!!!

I kinda do the same except I use two floor jacks and only let it down once overnight. And as was said, it usually takes 9 quarts to get it back to full, just have to be patient in letting it trickle into the pan.

The filter should be full, and it shouldn't spill a drop if you're using the proper filter - i.e. K+N or Mobil 1.
