Default Noisy ZF

My transmission is noisy in first and a little in second. Not really bad but noticable. Its kind of like a scratchy noise, marbles in a metal dish.

"90 20K. could be clutch I guess. Car has the stock flywheel!

Any thoughts?

Mine has similar sound, almost a quiet metallic swishing sound. Does it in the higher gears and regardless clutch position....

Mine is only when clutch is engaged and it disappears under hard acceleration. not quiet though! It is pretty noticable. Not many replies so maybe I have everyone including myself stumped. Looks like a trip to the trany shop may be in order.

Does it happen with the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, or just with the pedal depressed enough to disengage the clutch?

Does the noise increase/decrease with engine RPM?

What about in reverse?

Is it like the whine in my sound clip in my sig? I *believe* that is a normal sound for the tranny.

I heard the whine in your sound clip, can't say I have heard that but in one of the 6 vettes I have owned, and it was due to the 4.10s not shimmed correctly, and it would only do it under acceleration.

On your whine, does it stay constant even when you decelerate?

Is it there if you sit in Neutral and give it gas?

Thanks for the sound bite. Your "whine" sounds like a perfect ZR1, mine does that too! The sound I am referring to happens in first gear mostle although it is apparent other times. Occurs mostly at low speed goes away upon acceleration, only really noticibale when I am rolling or decelerating, only when clutch is out fully. When clutch is pressed down, noise goes away. This is a scratchy metallic noise, not a whine

EEegs, from what you describe, it sounds like there is something wrong with some of the gears in your trans.

Gears have a drive side, and a coast side, and when problems are on the coast side, they are only heard when decelerating. Also, from how you describe the noise, maybe some of the teeth are cracked.

I would give the ZFdoc a call and see what he says. He is the definituve expert on these trans.
