Ive got a bad amp in the passenger side rear on my 91,it has been making a horrible noise and i narrowed it down to the amp,can these be fixed or are they a "throw away" item?
Thanx
Cliff, the amps are easy to repair, I have fixed myself 7 out of 8 amps (4 in my car and 3 from a friend's ZR1)
All you have to do is replace the 6 capacitors that tend to fail (2 big black ones and 4 smaller green ones, if I remember correctly), unsoldering them from the board and soldering the replacement in the same place, you can get the capacitors and a small soldering iron from any electronics shop, 4-5 sterling pounds will get you the parts needed for all your amps.
There is a post somewhere in this same forum about how to do it, and maybe also in the ZR1net
Maybe it is another "demo" for the next get-together in the UK...

cheers mate!
I did the same thing. It just takes some time with a pencil soldering gun, I got my capacitors from Radio Shack. They were not exactly the same value as the originals but close. There is a number on them for the value. I used the post on the net as a how to guide and probably had less than $30 worth of parts. Go to ZR1.net site and type in bose amp repair in their search catagory and you will find how to do it.
Hi Cliff, The net registry site does have the instructions for a do it yourself repair. I sent all mine to Bose, it was not cheap, over $300 with the shipping. They work fine & they replace everything including the speaker so all you get back is your mounting plate the rest is R & R'ed. They say that they have altered the amp circuitry a bit to get better sound. I can't speak to that as mine didn't work at all, nothing to compare it to.
The only thing is the system still has no bass, IMHO, my std radio in my DD tempo sounds better than my bose!?!?
& gingle bells!
Tom
Oh I forgot this, WEGONE replaced his rear speakers with C5(?) units I think?? Look over at the Zforum there is a thread on it. I know the thread was about getting more watts using stock vette rear speakers from a later model corvette.

you can do it. i fixed my left rear last nite. if you have an old one, theres usually some good parts left to rob off it. i replaced (robbed) 2 transistors off an old board and it worked. it had low distorted volume and was squealing loud. i had nothing to lose and the price of a new one to gain. good luck to you.
I remember reading that some of the old Nissan's used the same Bose amps and that they could be swaped. You may be able to pick some out of a wrecking yard perhaps real cheap and easy.

Thats a brilliant tip,i might make a trip down the Breakers later and investigate, ive just got the tools to do the job so i will have a go.
