Depends on which bearing it is. If it's the tail shaft bearing you could remove the tranny and pull the housing yourself, have someone replace the bearing, and then do the reinstall work.
6-7 hours sounds about right - I can do a clutch change in 3-3.5 hours and I'm usually just about 1/2 chilton time.
A new ZF6 for 1800 bucks is a good deal in my book, if in fact it is new. Make sure you know the difference between a blue tag and black tag ZF6. One was in the later model ZR-1s and one is stronger than the other. I don't have my notes here so I can't be exact on which is which.
Sounds like the same problem I had in my 90
I believe it was the line shaft bearing which would make a screetch but only certain times
I had them replace the throw out bearing at the same time
They had quoted the job a 1000
It's a tough call but I will say that that did fix the problem with my 90 and it has been fine ever since - going on two years
Does it only happen when it's cold and you are letting the clutch out? Does it sound like a little dog barking when you do? If so, it's almost definitely the throwout bearing. You would have to take the trans out but I'm not sure it's worth it.
I've had my car for 6 years and it made that sound at first(hadn't been driven much in the 3 years prior). After driving it for a while, it stopped and hasn't done it since(knock on wood). Eventually you'll need to replace it but I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary at this point.
it does seem happen more when its cold that when its warm
and i would maybe say it kinda sounds like a dog barking but not sure, kinda a whining, will have to listen next time it happens.
but it defintitly happens more when its cold
what part of indiana are you from zr1won?
From what you explain, I don't think it is a syncro in the tranny. I know you said bearing, but I have heard some people refer to the syncros as bearings.
If in fact you had a bad syncro in the trans, you would get a lot of grinding when shifting into a certain gear. Trust me, I know. It would also cost a lot more than you were quoted and take a couple days to do the work.
I think your problem is one of the above suggestions from what you have described. Again, I am not a C4 or ZR-1 expert, but I have been around a little bit.
If it is a throw out bearing, you don't need to open the tranny. Just a quick removal and replacement of the tranny to change the throw out bearing.
We've exchanged a few PMs; I'm just north of Louisville, Ky. Did you join the ZR-1 Net Registry email list yet? I still say it's your throwout bearing and unnecessary to replace unless you just can't stand that little dog barking..
Good topic. My throwout bearing will be replaced on 5/10. Same symptoms. Just started recently with that unusual noise. $510 labor plus part. 5-6 hrs of work.
I have a 93 zf 6 speed that I have done the clutch job myself twice. It's not too bad to do yourself. I use Centerforce clutch and pressure plate. I only expect 20 to 30k miles from the set since my driving habits are very bad and it's all in town. As far as noise goes it may also be the dual mass flywheel, hope it's not they are expensive, that noise is mostly while at idle speed. If your problem is the slip yoke bearing that can be changed without removing the tranny. Remove the rear housing and inspect and replace the bearing if necesssary. If you have a noise/vibration while driving it could be the u-joints or driveshaft balance. Only use Spicer u-joints. I made the mistake of using Percesion u-joints and ended up with a bad vibration. The zf6 is not repairable cost wise and the dealer's will only replace them. The Chevy list price is over $5000 so stay away from that job. If you let you clutch go real bad you can mess up the tranny such that you might as well replace it. The synchro's and bearing kit is over 1,000 plus labor you are better off buying a new zf6. Here is a link to a zf6 dude www.zfdoc.com. Contact me for more info about your noise and I'll be glad to give you my opinion if you want

One way to tell if your clutch needs to be replaced is if you feal ANY resistance to going into reverse or 1st when cold or hot. My car with only 30k on a Centerforce dual friction had a hard time going in to 1st. You could actually feal the car moving forward from the synchro's working (not enough air gap any more). I replaced both the master and slave hoping that is was hydraulics but my clutch was just plane abused. Hey I had alot of fun but $570 for the "best" clutch hurts alittle when they only last 30k miles. Still watch the clutch hydraulics, like zrdoc says a bad clutch will screw up a good zf6 beyond repair!

I've got you beat, my clutch only lasted just under 20,000 miles.
I just had it replaced last week at the tune of $875.00 parts plus labor. If I had time I would of tried doing it myself, but with only a week till the ZR-1 Gathering I paid big time for it.
