I need help diagnosing my secondary problem. A few weeks ago I was triing to find a vaccum leak when I noticed my secondary pump was constantly running. I used a vaccum leak smoke machine and found no leaks. Then I removed the vaccum line that connects to the plenum and pluged it with my finger, the pump turned off. So, I came to the conclusion that it was my check valve. I went out to replace the check valve but, this time when I put the key in the on postion, the pump would not come on at all. Before, even when the car ran correctly, the pump would come on to charge the system but, this time nothing. I took the line off from the pump and it ran constantly. When I put it back on, nothing. Any ideas? Also, I am getting a lot of codes (45,55, and 64) and a lot of black smoke but, I belive they are all related to the secondary problem. And yes I have check the MAP sensor vaccum line.
That sounds like the line up to the engine is cloged
becasue if the pump is working when you have the line off then its working, But your lines are telling it they have vacum?
that is weird anyway how old are your lines? probably not old right..
I was thinking the check valve as well but not if your pump doesnt even come on, have you cracked the pump open to see if it is corroded on the inside and maybe it worked because you had moved it around.
my old one would work if I smaked it turned out the inside of the pump the little mechanism that controls when the pump turns on and off was rusty
Yeah, I smacked it around a little but still nothing. The lines are as old as the car. As soon as I get my plenum gaskets from White Racing, I am going to tear it all down and inspect each line and just go ahead and change the check valve. It is cheap enough to change it just in case and to have peace of mind. Beside that is one step closer to troubleshooting it all. Next I will probably replace the silinoid if the check valve doesn't work. But, I can't see how the silinoid would be bad.
well if its not the check valve, you said you did that by removing the vacum hose on the drivers side that is the one you do to check the check valve.
If your pump isnt working until you take off the vacume hose im not to sure about that.
but if your lines are original go ahead and replace them, you get leacks at the conections because all they are is glued into the ruber gromet pieces and they tend to just get loose over time.
anyway the selonoid can just go bad from age, lack of use. and just becasue its a GM part.
be sure to check any new selonoid you get and make sure it is good before you install it just apply vacum to it and youll see if its good.
Your check valve is backwards. The pump probably comes on for a milisecond then holds vacuum.
I'm more worried about the black smoke. If the secondary system wasn't functioning, it wouldn't do anything, no secondary injectors or butterfly opening. When does it smoke exactaly?
The black smoke only happens when I rev it up. It doesn't do it with idel or normal driving. Only when I get on it. I know it has something to do with the check valve beacause, the pump use to run all the time and I hadn't done anything yet to fix it. I am wondering if the check valve is so degrated that it is cloging my system totally. I don't know. I don't believe it is on backwards because, I haven't messed with it at all.

If the secondaries aren't opening fully, then air is restricted, thus causing a rich afr - and black smoke. Fix the secondaries.
