Default I need some advise on a power antenna repair

Hi guys,

I have a 1991 ZR-1. I noticed the other day upon exiting my car that the antenna only went half way down.

The motor is still audible when I turn the radio on and off, but the antenna no longer moves.

I tried applying some WD40 to it but that didn't help.

1. Search didn't work for me. Could someone post a link that I can read and do a little more research?

2. Does it sound like something is stripped or has come loose?

3. Do you access the aperatus from the interior or exterior of the car?

Any advise and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Not sure if a ZR1 is any different, but I accesed mine from under the rear end of the car. The wiring plug is under the rear carpet too. Probably just the bottom of the mast where the plastic teeth go around the gear is broke, you can replace just that part for less money but you have to take the unit apart. When mine broke, and yes it was aformentioned part, I just replaced the whole thing. MidAmerica had the one for my year on sale for $99 which in that case you just unplug and remove the whole unit, then re-mount and pug in the new one.

Long skinny arms like I have made it easier to reach up in there to get to the mounting screws/bolts, etc. I also jacked up the rear on that side a little.

Good Luck.

It's probably the ribbon that broke. I just replaced the whole atttenna unit about 2 months ago due to the same problem as I figured that it had "age" on the motor too. Not a fun job but not that bad either. Bring the car up here and we'll change it out over a few cold ones.

Really shouldn't use WD40 or other like products on the mast. Dirt will adhere to it. The manual calls for using minereal spirits. You may want to give that a try before replacing the whole unit.

Thanks for the replies. Printed out a couple of tech tips. Should make the job much easier.

Thanks for the invite ittlfly, don't think the family will let me off the leash to travel that far.

No problem. Like I said, I just did mine and I'm still fresh on the 'how too's" of pulling the unit if that's the way you decided to go. If the ribbon broke and you can't get BOTH pieces out, you'll have to pull the attenna unit to install the new mast.
