Default Sig Pics

OK guys, with the new software, we lost the automatic resizing of pics. EVen with the old software the guidelines for sigs was less than 450 pixels wide total.(not each pic, but all combined).

If you notice an "edited by Mr Mojo" in your post, it's probably because I unchecked the box for your sig.

This was the reason Troy toyed with the idea of removing sig pics altogether, too many people had(and have) huge sig pics.

With the old software this would cause slow loading for dial up users and I'm no computer expert, but I was told it used excessive bandwidth and it was also causing problems for high speed users.

Even though the pic was "small" in the post, in reality it was still large behind the scenes and people with large(byte) pics were slowing the forum down.

This is also why Troy allowed everyone to have a custom avatar, to help cut down on sig pics and give everyone a chance to personalize their posts without having to include their sigs.

You will notice how often I attach my sig, usually only when I create a post and only in the first reply.

I'm starting this here and will move on to other sections. We have a broad group of owners here so you can spread the word if you see someone with a very large sig pic.

If you have a large sig pic, please reduce it.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

A too large picture also widens the format. It can require me to have to pan and scan just to read each single line of a post. That makes reading VERY tedious. Even MY sig picture has grown with the new software. Is there an easy way to shrink it, or must I go back, edit, and re-upload to the host?

You'll have to resize it and then reupload it.

Mojo,

How do you add and upload your sig pic? I uploaded a profile pic but see no way to get the sig pic back?

I've been working on computers for 40 years but sometimes the new software packages just drive me nuts! This is getting as bad as Microsoft reinventing the wheel every two years.

Now it's back to something more rewarding, detailing my car for the upcoming show in Manasas.

It's not difficult, some of you guys have JD hosting your pics, it will be his responsibility to resize them.

I can help resize, but I can't help with the hosting.

I resized my original on my computer and reuploaded it. My photo edit software asked me for the size. I spec'ed 450 pixels wide and let the height conform to the original proportions.

Here is a suggestion:

Come up with a checklist to follow for resizing pictures. I know everybody will have a different way to do it and different equipment, but there has to be a common way to do this. Give some "detailed" examples. Include what programs to use. My camera has a program (came in enclosed disc) to resize pictures, but I need to know how to change all my pictures on the forum. Do I have to resize all the pictures that are in my host, first? From now on, if I post a picture, do I resize it then put it in my host then go to the forum? As you can tell, I need help.

I would be the LAST person to ask for computer advice. But what *I* did, was resize the original on my computer, and then uploaded the "new" picture to my host. Then I referenced the new, resized, picture, url to the forum. There is probably a better, more efficient way to do this, but for me, this seemed the most intutitive.

IMO,

What we really need here is the ability to post attachments like the vBulliten forum software. This lets people post pictures, technical drawings, etc without having it on another website first. It comes right from their hard drive. I have tons of potentially helpful pictures from working on 3 C4's over the years but I can't post them because I have no website where I can post them first and I wouldn't know how to do that anyway.

I tried posting pictures on my motor forum (www.rccars.com) but they wouldn't come up on here. I had to have one of the moderators do my sig on his website. I don't know what the problem is.
I'm sure this forum would be tons more helpful if people could easily post a picture of what they were having a problem with and others could respond quickly with an attachment right from their hard drive of their solutions. This sure beats going to another website, posting a picture there, then coming back here a posting the web page. That's IF you have a website you have that kind of access to.

Well Jim, that function is only available to moderators at the moment.

Soon Troy will have the galleries setup and each member will have a place to host pics.

As far as linking to other sites that host pics, that shouldn't be a problem unless the hosting site is restricting it.

We have the ability to view pics hosted elsewhere.

No, you would have to upload it to the gallery and then copy the link into your sig.

I know that the forum is not a computer training site but for those of us that are "Computer Challenged" a simple check list might be advantageous to both us novices and Forum personnel.

I stopped using my sig... if anyone needs to see it, it is still available on profile.

I think they suck up space... and bandwidth.

They used to be fun, but some people (cough, cough, C5, cough, cough), took it WAY over the top.

I like sigs as well as long as they fit the guidelines and are not posted more than once in a thread.
