On a hunch, and the fact that a new fuel pump and strainer was only 55 bucks, I went ahead and installed it this morning. The car runs like new again. Not only does it pull much stonger now(for those that didn't catch my other thread, I've been off this season by as much as a second on the quarter), but my gas mileage is back to where it was last year. At 55, I was averaging 18 and now it's back up to 28. Cruising around in sunday light traffic around town, i'm averaging about 23mpg or so.

I'm just happy everything's back to where it was. The old strainer was pretty deteriorated and broke apart in my hands. And there was some nasty stuff on it, including long blond hair. I don't get that, but oh well. The tank looked pretty clean inside though, and I had let it run down to below 2 gallons before i did it. Also, the strainer was on 90* off, with it going longways from one side of the car to the other, instead of with the length of the car, as a handful of people said before when I ran a search.

Did you put the long end of the strainer toward the front of the car?

I did. It seemed like the logical way when I looked at the baffle in the tank.

I had just changed the filter about a month ago, so I didn't bother.

where can i buy a new fuel pump? and do u have instructions and pics on how to change it? i have a 1984 L-83

i stated in my other post that i was having problems with my car boggling in hot weather like it doesnt get gas, would a new fuel pump help it? WHATS CONSIDERED PINCHING WITH A CLOTHES PIN? to prevent vapor lock

I don't know about pinching anything with a clothes pin. But you can pick up a new fuel pump at Napa or any of the other stores. Be sure to pick up a new strainer too while you're at it.

If you run a search for "fuel pump" on this site, you'll come up with a lot of explanations on how to install it. It's not hard. This was first time doing it and it took about an hour.

How many miles did you have on the old pump?

Not sure, I wasn't the one that replaced it. But I've had the car for about 20k miles. I'd have to dig through the car's service records to find it, but I don't remember it ever being done. There's 240k miles on the car.

I have a hard time with that figure, is that info as reported by the computer

or by your own math.. Just asking , I dont see how a 350 could get that kinda mileage

in any car...

It's going by the computer, but in the past couple months, i've been resetting the avg fuel rate each fill up and it's been within a mpg. Going by the computer seems to be pretty accurate. My old 86 used to be off by several mpg. I think it just varies car to car.

It's also funny how some L98's get much better gas mileage than others. My car's kept in very well tune and it was it's whole life, so that may contribute to it. Every owner was exceptionally meticulous about keeping the car in great running order.

On this 86 we just bought, with 16,700 miles, 4+3, wife got 35mpg on the way home from Reno. That almost as good as I got on the new FI Ultra Classic!

My 94 with new plugs and wires got 35.8 mpg on a trip to Savannah Ga 3 years ago :yesnod:

Make a run from the SF Bay Area to Seattle monthly. When I first bought the 85 I was getting 26 mpg, then installed hypertech power chip which dropped the mpg to 25. Just recently changed injectors, added adjustable pressure regulator cut out air box, ported phelum, changed out fuel pump and cut back the plugs. Made the run from Seattle to Bay Area on Sunday and got 27.8 pmg running 1-2 mph less than limit from Washington (70 to 60 MPH), Oregon was 55 to 65 MPH and California 70-60 MPH then hit stop and go traffic. All the mods were for HP, but if you keep your foot out of it the mpg goes up. You can get good mileage out of a 350! :yesnod:
