What starter to buy for my 86...
I just changed the battery today thinking that my battery was bad. It had low water in it, so I went to Sears and bought a Die Hard Gold. Car starts a little tiny bit better, but problem not fixed. It might take a few times of cranking it to get it started. The starter turns real slow, and sometimes clicks like it has low battery. I know the wiring is good. It does it hot, and cold. I am thinking the starter is almost gone. I was looking on Summit at starters and am trying to find one that is not too expensive, but that is better than stock. I will be putting Hooker Super Comp Longtubes on soon, so I guess I need a starter that is adjustable so I can get as much clearance as possible. If anybody has any ideas or thoughts, please let me know. Thanks!!

You will not have a problem with clearance on the hookers if you use a stock starter. I wrapped mine with thermo tec and have had the same ac-delco reman for ten years. The smaller gear reduction starters can be found for $150 or less. These will spin over a 10:1 motor just fine. If it were me I would let the budget decide. Avoid the cheap remans from the discount stores. Getting a good one seems to be hit or miss. Just my $.02

Just my experience here, take it or leave it. I went through a couple of high dollar "high torque" mini-starters on my car. Then I took the advice of a very good Vette mechanic, "buy the lifetime warranty starter for a '89 6 speed Vette from Checker Auto Parts (local chain I think, it's an Autolite brand rebuild). The stock 6 speed starters are the best. The lifetime warranty is worth it. I've had the starter go out a couple times in the last few years. I just pull it out and take it back with my papers and they slide another one across the counter to me. After you do this r&r a few times you get very good at it and it's no big deal. Again, read my first sentence. Good luck.

I took my stock starter off when I put the Hooker 2151's on, because there can not be more than 1/4 clearance between the collector and the starter, they last thing I wanted was to go on a cruise and turn the car off and it not restart due to heat soak,,
if you are going to buy one, get a mini starter, that way when you take your headers off in the future you wont have to take your starter off too.
The two best mods I did ,last years was the Dewitts rad and the ministarter.

I would think that one from Summit would work. I'm pretty sure you have the 153 tooth flywheel (actually a flex plate if you have an auto). I guess you don't like my suggestion. Oh well, good luck with whatever you buy.

Hi. Your idea was a good one, but I have hooker long tube headers on the way. I need the extra clearance that a smaller starter will offer me. I appretiate your feedback on the subject.

I don't know about the Hookers, but I just installed TPIS headers on my 86 and had absolutely no clearance problems with the stock starter, and didn't have to remove it for the install. I did heat wrap it though.

I have Hooker 2149 long tube headers, and a Champ Pans 9qt road race oil pan. There is no problem getting the stock 6 speed starter in and out. There wasn't a problem with the stock '86 starter either. But, the 6 speed starter is better. Oh well. Good luck.
