Default 3.07 Dana 36 with Drag Radials??

Hello everyone.

Just installed the 17" x 11" rims wrapped in Nitto 555R Drag Radials on the rear.

I am curious how the D36 rear will hold up on my L98 with light mods (see sig). My 60 foot times are consistenly around 1.8 with a launch at 1100 rpm on the stock '89 stall converter. Where as the car used to spin pretty much through all of first, it bites without even a chirp now. Should I be concerned, or is this easily within the limits of a D36?

Its no longer a question of "IF" with DR's, its "WHEN?"

But it should take alot of passes with the DR's.

With drag radials the D36 will go at some point. It could be your first pass or it could be your 100th. :yesnod:

:iagree: I ran over 2k passes on my dana36 with drag radials before I broke mine. I had THE only good one. The first 1.6 60' pass killed it dead. RIP :blueangel: By the way, I only broke the spider gears. Fixed it for $50. It lives again in my friends rag top!

I have 700-800 launches on my never opened, stock, 3.07, Dana 36, with BFG Drag Radials. But I'm not hitting 1.8 sixty foot times, either.

RACE ON!!!

One day at the track usually won't kill it. I would start saving up for a Dana 44 because it will eventually happen if planning to use those DR to their fullest potential.

As the previous vette-lova's mentioned, it is pretty much a crap shoot. I upgraded my perfectly good D36 with 3.07's that I got 1.8-1.9 60foots with the D44 I have in there now, as I got a steal on it, and did not want to get stuck breaking a rear-end at the track. I'd say, save a bit, keep an always hunting eye for a D44 and when the chance come sup, get it and swap it, or get it and store it until you need it.. I think once you hit 1.7 and below, you are REALLY stressing the D36 rear-end. Also if you change to a higher gear, the higher the gear, the mroe teeth, the less material between teeth= faster breakage. Always keep that in mind..

I agree that it depends mostly on what short times you pull; that realy determines the amount of stress on the drive train.

It it tempting to shoot for lower ETs by dropping your short time but if you stay in the mid 1.8s-low 1.9s you should be ok. I can pull those shor times on a sticky track with street tires and have put quite a few passes on it.

If you decide to go with a higher stall TC and start pulling 1.7s a D44 should be in your near future plans.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The consensus seems to indicate that I should start saving for a D44. Point taken.

My planned mods (roller rockers, intake porting, base, runners, etc) are more for the high-end. I'm hoping that if I keep the 3.07s and the stock TC, the D36 can hold on for a year or two. Guess I'll have to be gentle with the launch.

Thanks again everyone.

My d36, 3.07 has held up to a 1.73 60 ft. The car has only been launched at the track twice so I'm not convinced it can take much of that abuse. I'll just run it till it breaks, then get the d44.

my d-36 has 20- 1.61-1.65 60' on it. I aquired those last year while launching off the line with nitrous and slicks, the rear is still working fine. It must be the 135K miles on it.

The auto and stock stall are going to be much easier on it. From looking at your future mods of RR and ported base, i think you won't change 60' much ( may even hurt it) but it should pick up more on the big end.

I also have the D36 with the same Nittos on 11's...I have been 60 footing a 1.73 and running a 7.9 in the eighth....I have about 12-14 passes so far....I guess its a matter of time before mine goes boom....I will be installing nitrous next week...I'm sure that will do it....

yeah, that's me. Which car do you have ?

Mine is now a 355 carburated and will once again be sprayed, most likley with 2 kits by the end of summer. My friend is the guy with the black( 94) firebird, with bolt ons and went 11.52. He also has the supercharged nitrous BBC 68 whits Camaro.

Is he the one that has "raptor" on the windshield? That car seems to pull pretty good. I had a silver 86 last year and talked with you just a bit. I now live in Mishawaka and have a 91 vert.

Should have my car done a ready to test this friday. Maybe I'll see you out there. :steering:

change your rear end fluid and never lower the 555 below 22 psi or you willbe walking home first you will hear a howel noise at the rear and then the next noise will be a rev and no foward movement /get some drive shaft loops on the rear it will save the floor of your corvette when it goes,125 nos never launch off the line turn on the nos just befor the 60 ft mark and the 36 will last longer. :smash:
