remote alarm not working-why is it so?

remote alarm not working-why is it so?
Dont know the full name for it however before i could walk up to my 93LT1
and the factory alarm would "beep" and the interior lights would come on...this is when i would have the remote control switch in my pocket or hand.
The same when you left the car and walked away..the lights would go out and the car would "beep" as to arm the factory alarm, the car was then locked.
All of a sudden yesterday it doesnt do it and i must press the unlock button on the remote to gain entry...there is no more alarm arming beep/chirp.
I replaced the lithium battery in the remote to no avail. any ideas? cheers jr
