Flowmaster series 50 on stock C4 L98
Well I've seen tons of different opinions on mufflers. I'm looking to replace the original mufflers as they are looking bad. I saw the 50 series from Summit for $107 each. I'm in the middle of doing the rear hubs so it's a good time to replace as I'm right there.
These are supposedly better about the resonance. Even their material states they are better than the 40 series.
And because it uses a special resonant tuning chamber, it’s significantly quieter than the 40 series muffler while offering comparable performance!
How much louder than stock will these be? On a 10 point scale if stock is 1 and 10 open exhaust what should I expect. I'm not to concerned about sound when driving hard, but would like idel and normal driving not to be too obnoxious.
Any thoughts?

I have them on my '86 Convert and the resonance was obnoxious until I extended the tips and put removable pipe plugs in the two inner tubes. Now they're OK and I can remove the plugs if I want. Resonance before made it difficult to hold a conversation in car @ around 14-1700rpm.

I don't know abou the 50 series mufflers but the resonance on the 40s was killer.
You might want to look at the Magnaflow.
They offer mufflers as well as the full catback.
They are much louder than stock and had no resonance in my 86 coupe.
My wife used to be able to hear me when I turned into the neighborhood. Now with the Corsas she can't hear me until I turn onto my street... :D

Re: Flowmaster series 50 on stock C4 L98 (rcolling)
I had the force II cat back system on my car and that came with 50 series mufflers. They were hardly louder than stock. A little deeper tone but that was about it. I was very disappointed. But if you're just looking for a good replacement to the stock mufflers and don't want anything louder then 50's are for you.
I just ordered a set of the original 40 series.....their loudest muffler :yesnod: and I'm installing cutout's and eventually putting the electronic valves on them. Should be

I have 40 series on my car and they are very loud with a decent amount of resonance. I'd imagine that the 50 series would be quieter and with less resonance.

I ran a 2.5" 50 series 3 chamber on my Ford 5.0.
It's VERY quiet. The chamber is huge, so all you'll hear is a very LOW pitched rumble. I wouldn't use 50s unless I had open headers. But then again, I'm the type of guy to put elims on my vette. :smash:

Well it sounds like the 50 series are just a bit louder than stock exhaust which is fine for me. The question is then will the 50 series still give me a little performance boost? I assume similar to the 40 series performance numbers?
The performance gain isn't my sole purpose for making the swap but won't mind a 5-10% hp gain if at all possible.

I have the 50 series on an otherwise stock exhaust and I don't really like them. Yes they are louder than stock with some resonance but I just don't like the sound, not deep or throaty. Just not the V-8 sound.

I don't know what gains you'll see by chainging mufflers. There are other, more restrictive areas in the exhaust. I got a good gain (butt o meter) when I eliminated the precats, changed to a high flo main cat and had the flowmaster 40 series installed.

I've got the 40s on my 96 and they are loud and the resonance at 1700 - 2100 cruising is terrible.
I've got the 50s on my 86. They were installed at the same time headers and Random Tech cats were. Resonance is minimal to non-existant. The sound is a nice deep rumble.
The 40s are louder, higher pitched and has a burble similar to an inboard/outboard motorboat at times.

I just had Magnaflo's installed. Very nice low rumble. No resonance what-so-ever. FM 40 will give you nothing but a headache! 1-10 scale on Magnaflo's would be 5

Well....
Do you really mean real open exhaust or a system without mufflers?
The exhaust going through 3 catalytic converters significantly reduces noise verses a truely full-open exhaust (without cats). Normally, (unless you live next door to a cop who likes his quite-time) this is enough to get the nice sound, reduce back pressure and keep the man off your back.
But if you do install new mufflers, I personally like the sound that a FlowMaster makes to a SBC. Excuse the pun but your choice in mufflers "sounds" good to me.

Re: Flowmaster series 50 on stock C4 L98 (Dolfan)
Save up some money and get a Tri-Flo cat-back. With the resonator on, I had virtually no resonance, especially in comparison to my '97 TA w/40 series Flowmaster. It started out kind of high on resonance, but after about the 3k miles or so I put on the resonator, resonance had cut in half, if not more. Sound was def a nice deep tone as well and was not very loud, but louder than stock for sure. Please keep in mind though, that others have had "louder" experiences with Tri-Flo. I then took the resonator out (originally thought I was putting something else there, but didnt) and put straight 3" there. Sound is awesome now. Not as loud as my TA was, but resonance is only half as much as well. Plus they look awesome :yesnod: I don't think I'll ever go back to Flowmaster as I like the loudness you can get with a 40, but it's just not the sound/quality I prefer in general. The quality just doesn't even compare to B&B. My vote, save up, get a cat-back, my 3 choices were PowerEffects, Corsa, Tri-Flo, and I went with the one that I liked the looks of the most. You could always buy my resonator to go with your mufflers lol.
note: I also use RandomTech cats, but stock exhaust manifolds as of now
[edit] oops, L98, I have an LT1, if they don't sell same systems for L98, just ignore my comment

Dolfan,
I went with P/N/ 15623. I bought these from Performance Peddler ( see internet ) Paid $320 ( got 10% discount for being a Forum member ) These fit the LT1 / LT4. 92-96
I originally ordered a Flowmaster Force II cat-back, but was told by many that resonance would be an issue. So I sent them back to Summit Racing and picked up the Magnaflo's. Keep in mind, these are just the myfflers,no cat back. Dyno read 13% more HP gain. They also look great as they are stainless - mirrored finish. I believe others had posted some pics in the past.
Let me know if I can be of further help. I live in MN. The weather is FINALLY nice. Uncovered my girl a few days back! Man, it's nice to cruise around in the vert.

I just had these installed on my 87 today. It was just what I was looking for - a little more sound than the stock mufflers with minimal resonance. Can't say I've seen any performance increase, though.
