A.I.R. pump elimination question
I have an 87 coupe and would like to get rid of the air pump and its related tubing. I have read something about doing this and using a shorter serpentine belt to not have to use an air pump eliminator bracket/pulley assembly.
Does anyone have details on how this is done and which belt to use etc?

Re: A.I.R. pump elimination question (Chris O')
Thanks for the link Chris but what I was talking about was avoiding using the air pump eliminator bracket.
See this thread and look for the post by loiq, in it he says...
"I've been researching Air Pump Eliminators and dug up a post regarding a reverse-flow water pump. With this pump you can get a different length belt and do away with the eliminator bracket alltogether. Something to check into!"
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=731813
I have tried the search function of these forums to find more info, but it seems its down at the moment.
That is why I hope someone has info about getting rid of the air pump on an 87 coupe without having to use an eliminator bracket/pulley assy while using a shorter serpentine belt

Re: A.I.R. pump elimination question (lallend)
We have run this one before. The L98 vette uses a special reverse rotation pump as opposed to a normal SBC pump.(the belt runs under not over so it goes backwards).Regular pump bolts up OK but requires relocation of the alternator as the line between the Alt and A/c pump misses the top of the water pump.Haven't heard of anyone going to that much trouble hense the use of eliminators so as to maintain existing belt position.
Could poss get to work if not running air as setup would be similar to normal SBC ie: crank pulley to P/S pump to Alt to water pump

:iagree:
It would be a far more elegant solution to use a standard rotation pump and a short belt. If you have time, please research it, and tell us all how it is done.
In the meantime, this may be helpful.

Re: A.I.R. pump elimination question (britvette)
Yes, I'd like to hear about that too. When I was checking out the elimination of the air pump a guy with a Camaro posted this -
"f bodies have the same airpump installed.
what we do is remove the airpump and re route the serpentine belt to completely do away with the said pump belt required is easily available and a diagram of routing the new serpentine belt can be found at thirdgen.org "
It turned out that the Corvette idler pulley is in a different place to the Camaro and re-routing that way was not possible.
Here's a link to the Camaro belt routing -
http://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/atta...postid=1201469
and one to the Corvette

It would be great to solve the Air Pump problem cleanly.
Hope this inspires a great brain to give us the answer

Re: A.I.R. pump elimination question (lallend)
I did mine..Kinda trial & eror. I took a piece of string and routed it as if it were the belt. Just measure the approx. length required go to the Parts store and maybe get a few right around the size you think you need.

Re: A.I.R. pump elimination question (CAJUN C4)
The 1984 is unique among the other C4s because of the different accessorys layout. On the '84 one can simply remove the smog pump and use an 85" serpentine belt. All others require a pulley to eliminate the pump. Good luck, and...
