Default Quest for 11's

I am trying to get my car into the 11's (preferably low 11's) if possible. I have a 1990 6spd. coupe with a mostly stock engine aside from bolt-ons (forced-air intake, LT headers, full exhaust, etc.). I have a Mini-Ram, 3.45 gears (I think) and just bought a ZZ-9 cam. I plan on having the heads completely re-done (ported, polished, 3 angle valve job, etc.), but the short block is going to stay stock for now (until I blow it up). I am going to buy 1.6 roller rockers and freshen up the rest of the valvetrain. How far am I from my goal? Is it unrealistic? My 1/8th mile times right now, without the engine being tuned for the Mini-Ram (and a nasty timing retard at the top of 2nd and 3rd gear) is 8.6 with a 2.0 60' time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

I dont think you are anywhere near low 11s with that combo. If you get everything right, you'll probably be around low 12s. With extreme tuning and all the little things you might see high 11s. Good luck

gonna need some nitrous to get the low 11's. I'm on the verge of 11's with a long list of mods in my 90 6 speed coupe.

From that short time one thing you realy need is a good set of slicks and you will need some fine tuning with intended mods. I would also suggest full 3" duals with a cross-over pipe and RT cats (if your project car needs cats) as I don't think a single cat will flow enough for your needs.

You will also need an ignition upgrade as I expect your shift points well be over 6k RPM.

You should get close to 400chp with a mini-ram which would mean 11s is there, depending on weather.

There is some data with results of L98 mods on my site which shows a '90 Vette went into low 12s with similar mods except for the intake.

Other than ignition, what else do I need to do to get deep into the 11's (preferably without nitrous, but I can compromise).

Thanks,
Jeff

I would suggest getting different heads, sell those to finance the others.

60' must improve. adjustable shocks at all 4 corners, slicks are hard on rears drag radials will work and can be driven to the track. Also the RPM at which you leave must be in line. Rule of thumb is 2000 RPM from your shift point is where you want to leave the line at. (6500 rpm shift you want to leave at 4500rpm) A well built dana 44 can take 1.39 60' all day long. You should have enough motor to run 11's

Thanks for the help. What is the max. potential for my stock shortblock as far as hp and 1/4 times? I'm just trying to get an idea of what I need to do.

Thanks,
Jeff

You won't get into 11s with that combo, especially with that cam. You will need a much bigger cam, high CFM flowing heads, and at least 4.11 gears. I would sell your cam and give www.gtp-racing.com a call. They will put you in the right direction.

So with a ZZ9 cam, Mini-Ram, complete intake (forced-air, 52mm tb, etc.), exhaust, crank trigger and MSD ignition, what kind of numbers should I expect? Sorry to keep dragging this thread out.

Thanks,
Jeff

Under ideal conditions air was -1200' I had skinny tires, a 3000 converter, 1.6 rockers & in the 1/8 my ET was 7.79 @ 87 MPH ..on that run I ran my BEST ever 12.28 @ 110 mph. so I think you can get into the mid to low 12s no prob. but to get to mid 11s you gonna need some work..

Jeff in my honest opinion I would avoid the miniram like the plague. Sorry guys, bu I have seen 1 car go quicker with the miniram over the SR in all my time here and elsewhere. Sure on paper it should run better since it has short runner, but on the strip-I have not seen good results.

Get the SR intake, get your heads ported or buy a set that have good flow number comparible to AFR195 heads, or just get a set of AFRs. Obtain the 219/219 cam and you will be set for some extreme low 12s or possible in good air and a good dialed in setup, high 11s.

Oh yeah, get some slicks too. 1.6 or less 60' times are a must to get there.

Then when the 350 SB goes, you can put in a 383/396 with the same top end and cam, and enjoy 11s all day long.

Look up t.p.i.s. .com I have a combo that has 364 cubes with a miniram zzx-9 cam 11 to 1 je pistons full length headers and an x-pipe with 3inch exhaust. My best run this year at kcir was 12.02 at 116.76 thats with a factory stock rear and a 6speed. the hardest part of the deal is learning to" feel the rear hook" off the line learning to powershift may aid your time.Qouting the fastest people I know down there.DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!

I hate to break it to you, but acording to the math you're running about 13.47. ¼ Mile ET = (1/8 Mile ET + .22) / .655

Ya know with a 2.0 60ft the obvious thing is you need to invest in traction. MY car's mph should put me at mid 11's but it is damn inconsistent w/o traction I've spoke of elsewhere on this website my best flogging the car was 12.74 with bfg's kdw 275,40r,17's went to a best of 12.02. If that's your only car don't do it. It's bad math to replace tiresevery 10-15k miles but if it's your weekend hotrod you'll likley get 2-3years out of a pair of drag radials. I've got 30 passes at the drag's. I burn them hard and I drive the car every nice day in kc. I can. I have about 4500 miles on them now and they look very good , not brand new but plenty of tread and life left. That's going to change your e.t. standard at the drag's of what you can do. Out on the street they only respond slightly better than regular z rated tires. Rarerly have I sat at a red light with someone to race and heated the tires if ever. :steering:
