WHERE does the air COME FROM to air cleaner? + Mod idea
As above, after taking a good look at my C4 (As you do) I really wondered WHERE the air does come from - it does look, for all the world, that apart from a mere crack, MOST of the air fed to TB would come from under the hood! Kindof defeats a lot of purpose after opening up air cleaner lid etc as we do. I'd always thought it was somehow ducted up there, but seems like the only ducting is to radiator!
Now with this in mind, a mate has thought of maybe cutting a rectangular section OUT of the top of radiator ducting so that air to intake can be had from part of this airflow...effectively; this would mean turning the air filter upside down. I guess my worry of this theory would be would air pressure be strong enough to actually suck air OUT of TB intake rather than in?
Any thoughts on this ?

I believe there is already one being built and sold this is exactly like you are talking about. I just can't remember the name of it.

For SURE!
Well, I'm going to try it - hey, worse case scenario, if it doesn't work, the cutout can easily be patched back in and it'll all be hidden under the intake ram anyway, so won't look daggy!
I'm just surprised that no one has ever investigated this...gotta be worth quite a few extra HP to have cold air instead of engine bay air being sucked in! (Again, unless I'm all wrong about the source of intake air)

That is exactly one of the cold air kits sold by most places. They also or recommend replacement radiator shell if you want to keep your stocker.

I think it's Breathless Performance that sells an air intake kit that draws air froman opening to the radiator ducting area. A hole is cut in the shroud below where the OEM filter and duct would normally sit and a box-like piece is attached over the hole. A cone-shaped K&N filter is inside the box and a duct is attached to the TB.
Another kit takes cold air from where the front license plate would sit and a duct goes to a different air box. This would be good if you didn't have to have a front plate!! A concern would be water (rain, standing water on the road) from entering.

SO THERE IS!!!
I always thought this was a C5 item.
SO; my theory is right about poor airflow into TB?

Re: Mod idea (smacko)
To date I believe there are the three types for our radiator config:
-throught the license plate area
-in front of radiator from SLP
-through radiator shroud by Breathless or TPIS
I run the SLP unit which basically uses a stock size air filter lid with the top sealed off and a rectangular scoop that extends down the top of the radiator shroud, through a rectangular cut-out at the bottom and into the air stream to the radiator.
This unit has been worth about 5chp over the cut lid with K&N filter.

Re: Mod idea (65Z01)
What I did on mine was just find a smaller filter ( I used one from a Monte Carlo) and cut the radiator shroud a little smaller than the second filter so the rubber will still seal when you put it in the hole, Then cut another opening on the back side of the air filter cover to line up with this new filter. When it is back in place you draw air from both sides and if you save the plastic piece you cut out you can easily place it back for rainy weather.
Works good...

Vortex rammer cold air system. I almost bought one for my '95 but decided to stick with open lid and aFe (K&N clone).

Just a note, DO NOT CUT THE BOTTOM OF THE STOCK AIRBOX. It will not be filtered air going into the engine. If you want this mod, you will have to buy or make one of the airboxes made for this. :nono:

Re: WHERE does the air COME FROM to air cleaner? + Mod idea (kman0066)
I did this last year... cant find the post tho. Cut the original air box in half and flipped it upside down, and cut a hole in the radiator shroud.
Of course I added a K&N filter too. The car likes the cool air much more now.

Check my sig for a link to my website for pictures.
I'm selling this system with a ram air scoop that's not pictured.

Yea, I used to see a kit that does just that in the Mid America catalogs.

(Shameless plug) I am going to selling my flipped air box soon, to bring my car back to stock. It took me a while to find a used front radiator shroud.

Raysur, I think you have your sig turned off. What setup are you going to be using. I have this one and it seems to work well. Here's Raysur's cold air install http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/raysur/index2.shtml :steering:

The biggest advantage is the air your using is colder  The stock setup even with an open lid draws air from under the hood (hot :nonod: ) When you get up to speed the ram air effect starts to help also.
