balancing new tires.....goodyrs F1 GS-D3', wont balance?
Just mounted 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's on my 96 Z51/LT4........they are the orig rims.......had them balanced twice by different shops and they seem to be vibrating at 80mph. They are smooth at 75, 85 and up...........even does it after driving for an hour.....so I know it's not just cold tires. They are weighted with the stuck on weights on the inside of the rim. I wonder if I had them hammered on, on the inside of the rim, like from the factory if they'd drive better. Otherwise, the tires grip good in wet and dry, not too much noise. Any suggestions appreciated.

My first thought is how was it before the tire change? The rims, not bent? The tires on a C4 are wide and most balancers balance two planes. Outside and inside, therefore you should have weights on both the outside part of the wheel (just inside the spokes) and on the inside part of the rim.

They just stuck the weights on toward the inner part of the wheel.

Either one of 3 things.
1. Your tires werent built correctly (cant say Goodyears quality control is top notch)
2. Theres something wrong with your rims...Look for bends, etc.
3. The 2 balancing shops dont know what they are doing.
When I have my rims/tires balanced they use clip on weights on the inside, AND sticky weights to trim up the balance.

Uh oh. Same thing happened with my new tires... Balanced them again last weekend, to find out that one of the brand new tires was out of round and shouldn't be used... Have a vibration around 60, goes away around 75.

Try breaking the bead and rotating the tire on the rim. Some tire shops can put your tires on the balancer without weights, determine how much to rotate the tire, then do a final balance.
This always gives perfect results ~ unless the tire is out of round or you have a bent rim.

I had a post about this same thing last year. Most shops do the bare minuim, just so they don't vibrate at 65mph.Try to find a shop that uses the "hunter 2000 ?" I think. It puts a drum against the tire while it spins to simulate the weight of the car. It's suppose to be the best machine yet. :chevy

I would gladly pay top dollar for someone to balance my tires by spining it on the rim, and not use weights.
HERE'S THE PROBLEM: How do you tell a $7 a hour "tire buster" that you want them balanced with no weights?

Sorry ~ I didn't mean to imply that the end result was no weights.....:bb
A lot of shops continue to hang weights until they get an indication of balance ~ regardless as to how many weights it takes. The method I described will get you within a weight or two. In some rare cases it eliminates the need for weights.

Two questions:
1. How would you go about finding a place to do it properly.......the yellow pages dont help...........call and ask each one? The last place I used is a goodyear dealer......cost me $40 just to balance them, and they are not much better.
2. If they find that the tires are out of round...........I purchased these from the tire rack............so no dealer is going to go to bat for me........do I just contact the company, or am I just SOL?

I had the same problem.
Here is the ONLY way to get wheels balanced on a Corvette, or any other car that is sensitive to wheel run-out and sidewall stiffness variation:

Find a shop that uses a Hunter Vibration Control system.

It sounds like you hve a tire that's out of round. Defects like this shouldn't happen much anymore but it is a possibility. A good tire shop can check an out of round condition. If it is the problem, some shops will "true" the tire by grinding off the high spots. I would not accept a new tire that was out of round; that's a defect and it should be replaced under warranty.
Find a shop that has a Hunter GSP9700 balancing system: http://www.hunter.com/pub/product/balancer/Balancer.htm Click on the "Locate a GSP9700" link to find one in your area. This is a great machine to track down problems such as yours.
You might have to spend some money to get the wheel/tire assembly balanced properly. Your condition sounds a bit unsafe especially if you want to drive at high speeds.

If your rims are different widths, be sure to tell the balancer guy this. Sometimes they don't notice this and it throws the balance off. Stick-on weights is the way to go, but they have to clean the rim good so the weight will stay on. Also, have them spin the wheel/tire combinations and watch for an out-of-round condition. Have them shoot for exactly zero on the balancing - sometimes they get "close enough", not perfect.

I worked a few years for Akron Standard on tire uniformity machines and found out a few things about tires.
Most tires have some non-uniformity and are marked so that the hard spot can be oriented properly with respect to the valve stem hole in the rim.
You might check to see if your (next) balancer is doing that.
If a good shop determines that the tire is out of round (i.e. defective) Tire Rack should replace the tire, especially if they would like to continue doing business with Forum members.
But so far it sounds like you haven't found a good shop yet, good luck.

Aside from out-of-round tires and bent rims, definitely check out shops that uses the Hunter9700 balancing machine. My local shop uses it to cure my horrible vibration problem and only charged my $53 to boot!  Two years ago, this machine also turned my $5900 purchase of a '94 Seville from a lemon to a steal! (the Caddy is smooth all the way up to 110...shhh)

Thanks for the website for Hunter. Looks like there are alot of dealers here. I'll try one this week, and if the tire(s) are no good, I'll let you guys know how the "Rack" handles the situation.
I really appreciate the info. Here's to smooth drivin'
