Default Best bang for the buck?

The vette I just got is all stock. What do you guys suggest as the best bang for your buck in quick performance mods for a stock 95 LT1?

Thanks
Rick

Gears, you don't have to keep filling the bottle to enjoy them.

That reminds me. Is there a link here to Corvette option codes? Other than jacking the car up, is there a way I can find out what gear ratio is in this car?

Is your car an auto or 6 speed?

3.45 was the only available gear ratio for the 95 6 speed. If you are changing gears go with 4.10's.

for your car...
1.) Tune it up. (The first part of performance, is to make sure the car is at the factory performance level FIRST.)
2.) Get a set of 4.10/4.11 gears.
3.) Replace the resonator/mufflers with 2.5" straight pipes
That's probably going to be the best bang for the LOW buck.

Since i came over from TA land, you guys gotta translate some of this for me. Fortunately, the previous owner had the 100k service done on it within the last year or so. It only has 38k on it but he did it just for the sake of it being 7 years old at the time so the plugs and such have been taken care of and the car runs great. As far as resonators, I haven't quite gotten around to looking at how this factory exhaust is set up. Looks to me like directly under the manifolds sit twin converters. It looks like they merge into some kind of center pipe and then back out of there to two seperate pipes again and out to a muffler right at the back on each side. Trying to figure out why they didn't just run true dual on it. Is that center junction supposed to act like an X pipe or something like that? Exhaust typically is an easy add-on for about 20 hp or something. I took a look around and holy cow!!!! $1300  for a cat back system!! Also, it looks like the pipes are damn near 3" to the mufflers. This of course is just a guess at first glance. Might be 2 1/2. Thanks guys for the suggestions.

Wow! Someone else has already been there and done that. Thanks. For you guys that have already done the 4.10 thing, what kind of difference did it make for your 1/4 mile times?

I haven't had the car to the track. But, on the street the 4.10's are great. 1st and 2nd gears are out of control, and I'm still only turning 1900 rpms at 70 mph in 6th gear.

Yes, I know what you mean about muffler costs. The whole system is expensive because they have to partially pull the motor to change the headers for a true straight back system. They you get into this long discussion about X or H crossover pipe. I decided for now to just go for new mufflers from the single pipe and back. Not too loud... just loud enough for everyone to hear in first gear and the back pop when I downshift throught the gears. :steering:

I am new on this forum so I hope I am not out of step with others. I have a 96 LT-1 thats about the same as the 95. I installed a Procharger intercooled supercharger. Go to their website and check it out. It is a real eye opener to see the gain you can achive on pump gas. It will knock your socks off.
Best regards,
Barry

Barry, funny you should mention that. Was just looking at one. My only concern/question is what kind of abuse does that put on the engine? Will it cause it to wear out faster than if you didn't have on on there? if so, how much sooner? I mean, if say in stock form the engine would run for 200k, having a supercharger on it will kill how much sooner? Also, any gotchya's out of the deal Barry? Is it noisy? What other mods did you have to do?

Thanks

Rick

Thank you all for the warm welcome:
I will try to address Ricks questions and add a little on the side too. The Procharger comes with just about everything you need. The fuel management system kicks butt. With the extra fuel pump you will have fuel pressure to 90 pounds. Once the supercharger was installed, I noticed the engine was not happy because of the stock torque converter and restrictive exhaust. Now came a quick shift kit, 58mm throttle body, a 3200 stall torque converter, and a 2.75 inch Borla. Now it came all together with stock 3:23 gears.
The worse thing I had was an idel problem. You would get a smooth idel around 730-750. Then you would get a service soon warning light which was idel speed out of range. I also got sevice soon lights for code P172 and/or P175 for right/left bank running rich. I bought the Hypertech Power Programer with the Power Scan to read codes and also the Cam-header-supercharger cartridge. This cartridge lets you adjust the RPM idle speed, adjust shift points, top end speed, RPM values, etc etc. I think you get the point. I use the power scan to check the P172/175 codes and backed down the fuel pressure on the fuel management system to lean out L/R banks. Oh, I forgot. You gotta get rid of the platuinum plugs and boost the voltage with an MSD6BTM so the spark will not get blown out from the supercharger.
With the convertible, the estimated quarter mile is will into the 12's. About the only thing that gives the Vette away is when you pull away from a stop. There is the distinct whistle of the supercharger. On the highway when someone wants to play, they do not have a clue until they are reading your back license plate and wondering if they had their car in reverse.
Gas milage? I lost about 1 1/2 mpg on the highway. With this setup I get about 24 highway at 65 mph. When you get your foot into it, the instant readout for mileage drops to 1 (ONE) mpg.
I have the older model supercharger. The newer one gives about 10 percent more power. I will not tell you how much you will get because you will not believe it. You gotta check out the Procharge website for their results. I can tell you this much. It will knock your socks off when you are done with the project. With a three year warrenty, I think this is the best bang for the buck. It may not be the cheapest, but IMHO, the best.
Sorry for the modifications, but my spelling sucks. A little history and back ground on my Vette. I bought it as a retirement present to myself the end of 1996 just before winter in the Great Lakes area. About four years ago I put the Procharger on it. Repair history: a new water pump last week. Except for the idel and the L/R rich codes, it has been trouble free. I now have 30,600 on her and am tucking it away for the winter.
Best regards,
Barry
