Need Help and Info on Clutch Slave Cylinder - 1990 L98 6-spd
Does anyone make a clutch slave cylinder rebuild kit for a 1990? It may be best to just replace it since the paint is peeling off. I am told that the 89-90 slave cylinder is different than the 91-96 one. Does anyone know what the difference is? The GM sevice manual for the 90 says to bleed the slave cylinder, "Remove factory bleed screw on the actuator cylinder using a standard flutted screw extractor. Install new bleed screw." After bleeding the slave cylinder it states, "Tighten bleed screw until screw breaks (required for ground clearance). Screw should break between 14-19 N.m (10-14lbs. ft.)." Is this really how to bleed the cylinder? Did they fix this on later models? Is there a better aftermarket slave cylinder than the original? Any information or help will be greatly appreciated.

I like this one better
So you want to replace your slave cylinder because the paint is peeling?

GM sells them only as a complete, assembled, pre-bled, component.

The slave cylinder is leaking. Seems there is no rebuild, I will have to replace. Any good aftermarket slave cylinder and where to purchase? GM dealership wants $225. Is the 91-96 a better unit (bleeder placement and accessibility) and will it fit?
Thanks.
I do like that guy better. Where did you find him?

$225 is way to much, it should be around $90 if I remembing right.

Where is it leaking from?
And, :iagree: , no rebuild, or bleed screw replacement available any more.
You have to cheat it by bench bleed or as detail in the tip section. Once you have most of the air out it will actually self bleed due to air rising in the system & returning to the master cyl.
Mine works great after bleeding by having it off the car & pushing the piston shaft against a block of wood on the floor under the car. It pushed the air right up to the resevoir & pulled fresh fluid in w/ each stroke.

Check out zfdoc.com. Lots of good info there. He recommends buying from NAPA - the exact same parts as GM but a lifetime warranty instead of one year. It's what I did 2 months ago. I think the master and slave came to $225.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the input on this subject guys. I called to talk with Chris May but he is out till Wednesday. I spoke with Tim at Doug Rippie Motorsports and it seems that the 89-90 slave cylinder has the bleeder on top near the hose fitting orifice and the 91-96 has the bleeder on the bottom away from the hose fitting. Other than that the size of the cylinder and mounting are the same (1 1/16", M12 X 1). Correct me if I am wrong! DRM takes a 91-96 and modifies the hose fitting orifice for better flow. ($130) GM dealership wants $224.74 for an 89-90 cylinder and $143.55 for a 91-96. NAPA carries the 89-90 (P.N.-UBP37838) for $95.07 and the 91-96 (P.N.-UBP360017) for $80.48(Manufacturer is United Brake Parts-Lifetime Warranty). NAPA has to order it from factory and it will also cost you shipping charge and there is no refund if you order the wrong part. O'Reilly carries both as well. 89-90 (P.N.-CSA37838) for $88.99 and the 91-96 (P.N.- CSA360017) for $76.99 (Manufacturer is Brake Best-Lifetime Warranty). They also have to get them from their warehouse but they do not charge for shipping. I did also find the tech tip on bleeding the clutch.
Thanks again for all the info. :D

I have a '90 and replaced my clutch slave with the 91-96 unit. The late slave points the bleed screw down. If you retrofit the late slave into an early car, you will probably need the late hose as well. The hose fitting on the late slave is in a slightly different position than the early one. I also replaced the clutch master at the same time; I didn't want to take the chance of the master going out a few weeks later.

Thanks Jason, great info and pictures. Now I see what they look side by side. Where did you get all the parts (master, slave and hose) and how much did you have to pay? Was the installation easy enough, how about routing the line? Obviously my first time tackling this job. Any more info you could provide me on your installation (problems, difficulties) will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Is that steel braided line a stock part?!? Every time I look at that rubber section on mine I go, "hmmmmm... how long is that thing gonna last?".
As the old farmer said in Fritz the Cat, "one thing I'm good at, it fixin things!".

Jason, when you mounted the slave cylinder in the car did you mount it so the bleed screw is up and the line coming off the bottom? It looks as if the line comes off the bottom and then goes up towards the master cylinder. Thanks for the info, I will call Corvette Central tomorrow and get the the prices.

Sorry for the quality of the pics, but I didn't bother jacking the car up; I just reached under the car with my camera and started shooting blind!!
Bleed screw points straight down.
Hose comes off the top, runs forwards a little, comes back down at a 45*, then follows the firewall back up to the master. It has to go around the bellhousing.
The slave orientation in the earlier pics I posted is roughly "correct" for the new slave. The old slave is on it's "side", look at the mounting ears.
Oh yeah, CC has a website.

Thanks to everyone who gave input on this topic. Purchased a 91-96 slave cylinder at O'Reilly auto with lifetime warranty. It fit fine with the original line. No more leaks, nice pedal feel. Also thanks to the previous posts an input on replacing and bleeding. All very helpful.

I battled with this for a few hours. i just could not get to the line screw on the top to tighten. I could not get a wrench up there. so i finally got it off. but on re install-same thing the bleed screw was digging into the side wall (in fact the original one practically made a hole all the way through) even with a bent wrench I wasn't able to tighten the line, forget getting near the bleed screw.. then i thought was it really designed like this? so i put it in the opposite way.line on the bottom and the bleed screw on the side facing the center of the car. the line and bleed screw are both very accessible, see pic. Since this is just a piston that pushes fluid am I correct to think this wont make a difference? I do know a bleed screw on the bottom really wont work well any way. any advise will be appreciated. ( i still need to bleed it.)
