Default 700 tranny

I posted this in another topic by mastake...

I'm new poster here... What a great board, I have read so much info here that there is no more room in my wittle head  keep it comimg :D

My ???? is I have a 1990 L98 stock vette with a 700 trans. The tranny runs strong and shifts are really tight but I lost my engine breaking ( I think that is what it's called) I let off the gas and it goes into a coast, (it doesn't slow the car down), give it gas and it engages like there was no problem, no slipping or burning fluid, I have changed the fluid and filter and had the tranny flushed two times. The cable is adjust correctly, the shift is strong and I can break the tires loose when it shifts into second.... any suggestions?? I would take it to a tranny shop but I don't trust them, I pulled up to a coupleof shops and I can see money signs in there eyes.

Welcome to the Forum!

I don't know anything about transmissions. I am seriously thinking about buying a used one and having it rebuilt locally. Then I would have it ready if the time comes for a swap-out. I plan to keep my corvette forever, so there is a small amount of logic there.

Someone will come along with information on this. The amount of knowledge here is amazing. Be sure to filter it out with your own common sense. Some of us think we know more than we really do. :yesnod:

You have lost the overrun clutches and/or the sprag/hub has broken. This is what gives you the braking effect. It might last awhile.

Probuilt. Do you guys make a 700R4 that will live in a 450RWHP small block with 200HP of nitrous or should I go to a Th400? Sorry for changing the topic, but I had to take the opportunity to speak to Probuilt.

It might be possible with the new "Torque Drive" input shaft & drum assembly (so they claim). I personally am on the outside on this, as to if it will do as claimed, looks promising! As of now, for longevity, the 625-650 flywheel horsepower limit seems to me to be very realistic. If this works out with the "Torque Drive" assembly, then 725 to 750 HP would be the absolute "MAX", despite what anyone claims. If you can get 200+ verified quarter mile passes on a combination, then this could be used as a "realistic" claim for what a certain combination does, otherwise it's marketing & it's PURE BS!!!
