BEST OIL FILTER ? WHY IS IT THE BEST? FACT OR FICTION?
After reading and hearing so many negative coments about fram, I decided to replace with a MOBIL 1 . K- MART & AUTO ZONE are the only places that i know of that you could purchase these without mail order & paying $ 7.00 or more for shipping I. E. MID AMERICA. K-MART has gone belly up around here so it tried AUTO ZONE. All three stores were showing not available in there computer. They still have MOBIL 1 oil filters but stopped stocking the M1-202 for corvette per sales rep. at counter. I ended up buying a K &N PERFORMANCE GOLD $12.99 . ANY FEEDBACK ON THIS FILTER ? WHAT FILTER DO YOU USE? WHY?

Why? Because that is what GM says to use!
Best that I know of from a few tests in NYC cabs the best was Mobil and next came some unknown ones and Fram came after. I dopnt like Fram but Mobil looks like a good one.

If you really want to know the nitty-gritty on oil filters, look back in the archieves, maybe a month or two, and you'll find an exhaustive study on the different brands of filters. It talks about microns, psi, and other stuff. The bottom line is: there are 3 filters that stand out. Mobil 1, K&N, and good ole AC Delco "Ultra" the black one that most dealers have to order. I personally use the "Ultra" because it was a little less expensive when I bought a case.

There have been several oil filter "studies" on the internet (I've misplaced those bookmarks or I would post the links here). At least one of these studies hit a nerve with one or more of the filter manufacturers and was forced to withdraw his original findings.
One of the best (if not the best) for the LT1 engine is the AC Delco Gold (the more expensive PF-52) which has the highest flow numbers AND filtration to the smallest of microns. Naturally Delco has discontinued these filters and I haven't heard if they have returned. I bought 2 cases before they "disappeared". On a side note, the equivalent filter was slated to be discontinued for the C5s but the C5 owners mounted a write in campaign and saved that filter.
Best bang for the buck is the regular AC Delco PF-52.
Other filters which ranked at the top of most filter tests are the Mobil and the K&N.
Do a Google search on "oil filter tests" and you can probably find these other tests (other than the one that got pulled).
Hope this helps.

Speaking of nitty gritty. I can attest to the fact that unless you purchase a specialty filter (K&N, Mobil, etc, etc...) most of the filters are the same. Wix makes Napa. Donaldson makes blah, blah, blah. The point is there are only like 4 filter companies and they make most of the filters.
I'd type more but I have a naked woman attacking me...

Here's a link from the ZR-1 Net that you might find interesting reading: http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corve...lterstudy.html
I was also one of those people who had used Fram filters for years but I had heard stories of some companies who began to put less (and cheaper) material into their filters and according to some studies, Fram was one of them. I switched to AC-Delco oil filters in both Vettes and my Silverado. I was licky enough to score 8 AC Delco Ultragard Gold filters for my 92 before the local dealer ran out of them. Sure wish they would keep making them for the LT1 motor like they do for the C5's!!

make sure to buy the NAPA gold only !! they are identical to the WIX. the NAPA silver are not nearly as good. K&N is excellent....i don't like the M1, it is very restrictive because of the fine filter material.
NAPA, WIX, good old A/C Delco.

My personal experience has been that K&N is excelent. I use full synthetic mobil 1 oil and change it when it looks dark. with NAPA filters I was changing about every 3k - 3.5k miles. With K&N I can run 5k - 6k before it looks dirty enough to justify changing. I order K&N from Summit for $9, no shipping. Can't remember specific part number, just call and ask.

The K&N needed for the LT1 is the HP-2001.
I have been using them exclusively since I got my vette... I have never had a filter related failure using them.
cheap filters can rupture!!!! K&N's use a very strong case that will not split!

The HP-2002 is the one for us L98 (and every other SBC) guys. I use the HP-3002 though... it's the same filter but holds an extra half quart of oil.
And boy it's easy taking that filter off, thanks to that nut. :)

I was using K&N until they discontinued it. The K&N number for the LT5 was HP2007, as far as I can tell it's been discontinued. I started using the Mobil1 filter (M1-207).

What about Donaldson? That's what I've used lately, and the oil does look much cleaner. They're very expensive though - $15.
