It'll be a lot harder than your Chevelle, I'll tell ya that. I haven't done an LT1 yet
Oh come on now......I was hoping to have the whole job done in 10 minutes just like the Chevelle! :D Yeah, it sure looks like a nightmare in there. Not something I am looking forward to.

Scorp...you haven't done an LT1 YET ...there's a first time for everything!! Come on down! :jester

Best plug / wire choices?

Is the coil change a pain too...or should I swap a new one in while I'm at it. Which coil to use??

Thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate it!

-Rick

So....how hard is this plug / wire job going to be? Any tips for a rookie "Vette mechanic". :)
Have alot of time and patience, take your time and don't get frustrated.
Having a couple beers while doing the job helps too.

I also agree changing plugs, wires and maybe fuel filter first all cheap stuff first. Those things could potentially be the problem as well. Then move onto looking into bigger things if that doesn't work. (4 letter word)

Yeah, expect it to take a llllloooooonnnnnngggggg time your first time. Hope you got skinny arms. The plugs aren't the issue, it is getting those damn wires onto the opti.

Replace ONE wire at a time to avoid confusion.
Use the dielectric grease in the boots, just don't get it on the tips or on the plug connections since it inhibits electron flow.
Be careful around the wire looms as they are likely fragile and easy to break.
Be very PATIENT.....have plenty of time so you aren't rushed.

90% sure it's not your Opti (but there's a chance)....90% sure you need plugs and wires. I've seen this on a couple of LT-1's now, including mine. Identical symptoms. Stick a new, properly gapped set of NGK TR-55s in and try it.

So, what is the proper gap?

With a solid idle, I would have to blame plugs and wires...

Oh, get Taylor wires. They are da bom!

A couple of things...The plugs a on the pass side on the 92 are snap. On the drivers side, some guys pull the center inner fender well (where the ASR box attaches to). About 6 bolts and a wire loom and its out. That will open it up so you can get the plug wires under the compressor. I just pulled the compressor and (4 bolts) and laid it on top. if you remvoe the belt and its tensioner (1 bolt) that will make it a snap. A/C calls for .50 gap.......
On the coil / coil driver, its straight forward. A little tight due to the power steering resv....just lift it off the perch and lay it aside (right side up :D )..and DO NOT REMOVE the special white grease on the mounting plate unless you have some more. Hope this helps.

I've got a slight miss at idle with my LT1, too. Gonna' drop in a set of TR55 NGK Copper Cores and see if that takes care of it. No problems with WOT or under load near redline like you're describing, though.

My AutoLite platinum plugs have more than 18,000 miles on 'em, so it's probably time for a swap.

technically, they should not.

low rpm miss indicates carbon tracing in the cap/rotor.

Check to see if any codes are set. You may have an ignition module going bad as well.

1. Check to make sure the fuel pressure is staying up (the cutting out may be detonation or lack of fuel)
2. Wires
3. Plugs
4. Coil
5. Opti

There are a couple other things that can cause it, but the list above with get 95% of the causes of the problem you describe.

So I should replace the cap/rotor, then? Would you go O.E.M. or aftermarket for this?
