[ZF6]: Average cost on rebuild PARTS only?
Anybody got a clue as to what the parts alone cost on their ZF6 rebuilds? Synchros etc. assuming no major part malfunctions. Thanks. :)

-don't mean to sidetrack your thread
Looks like you're considering swapping in a ZF.
Just out of curiosity, have ya considered using a T56?
I saw a pictorial on how to do that in here somewhere.
I only mention it as it looks like the T56 is alot lighter than a ZF.
What do ya 'spose the whole 4+3 +OD weighs?

I don't know anybody making a custom tailhousing for a T-56 yet to go into a C4. Is there one now? The 4+3 isn't super heavy, probably 90 pounds or so if I had to guess.

Re: (Darkness)
Reason I ask is I can probably get the rebuild work done for $0.00.
Damn, you're hooked up :smash:

You planning on building one from spare pieces?
Parts ain't cheap as most can't be bought individualy.

Scorp,
I did some Google searching and didn't come up with much. I did visit http://www.zf.com and they have a spare parts section. There's a form you need to fill out and I guess they email you back.
Good Luck.

The parts are pricy, as I understand it, but the real problem is the labour.
Grab a copy of either Corvette Fever or Vette... in the recent months, one of them did a write up on how to repair a ZF6. It was proof positive that it was the last thing I wanted to take apart. heating shafts, cooling shafts, slip fits, custom rigs to hold things... ick-poo.
Get a good, early ZF6... one out of an 89-91... 92-93 are good, too, but the later 94-96 are weakest.
The T56 may be lighter than a ZF, but in comparison? they are junk. Plain and simple. The ZF is in another league.
Get one that is already together... you will spend $$$ to get the parts and HOURS rebuilding it... the last figure that I heard is about $3500.00, parts and labour, to rebuild one. That is from http://www.zfdoc.com - He is the MAN when it comes to these boxes.
if you decide to go this route, get a short shifter. The hurst is what I have, and I love it! However, from what I have read, the B&M may be better for drag racing.

Re: (scorp508)
As mentioned above, http://www.zfdoc.com is the King of the S6-40 gearbox. Also, Rockland Standard Gear (http://www.rsgreman.com/) is the official US distributor of ZF parts.
IMHO, I would just buy a used one in good shape (i.e. low miles). The cost of parts and the effort required to rebuild is too tall. I have a copy of the CF mag with the home rebuild article if you need it.

Re: (scorp508)
Hard to call the T56 junk when its used in the C5, Viper, F-Bodies, etc.
I am not impressed with it... the Fbody guys are nuking them FAST on the strip... much faster than a ZF6.
Also, they may share the same torque rating? But I honestly believe that the ZF is underrated and the T56, right at its limit.
Lets put it this way... how many T56's do you read about getting rebuilt? Versus the number of ZF6's? Being that this is a Corvette site, I would expect to read about it A LOT. But you don't...
T56's on the otherhand... I have 2 close friends that have had T56's nuke... and a couple of other casual friends (car show people) that have had them blow.... I don't know anyone personally that has blown a ZF6, and, the number of blown ZF6's here is VERY low... most of the time, new oil fixes the problem!!!!

Secondly, I am sure GM isn't biased when doing there torque ratings or else they would really be worthless.
Thirdly, the people that can afford to beat there camaro/fireturd to death are different and are more readily available than the people that can afford to beat there vettes to pieces.
