Default 137 K miler 85 L-98 with bolt on's goes 11.91.....

My vette has gone 12.23 with a 150 shot. I have been trying to get into the 11's with the stock TPI and internals. It finally happened!!!

60' 1.644
mid MPH 90.36
660' 7.575
1320' 11.912
MPH 110.84

I have always been able to run 1.7 60' with a et street. This time i used M&H Racemaster DOT tire (305-40-16). I ran several 12.20's again this day. then on a last attempt to get an 11 sec pass here's what i did.

let the car cool down to 160 deg.
took the paper element and lid all the way off the car
and lastly locked up the converter by jumpering the ALDL with a paper clip ( i learned this from thirdgen.org) it's supposed to be worth 2 tenths, and it is.

i did the burnout in 1st gear, pulled to the line primed the fomemade wet kit and put the car in D and pulled to the line. I left from a idle (820 RPM) floored the car the nitrouis hit and a 1.644 60 came out, as soon as the car shifted into 2nd gear the converter locked up keeping the load on the motor where it makes power and that was it.

Now i have run the 110 MPH before and couldn't get the car any faster, so i put on new springs and 1.6 roller tip rockers and 1-3/4 headers. And once again the car flies through the 1/8 but no matter what i do it won't go faster than 110 MPH ?

Mods are 1985 stock motor trans, converter, 3.07 gear. Timing set at 4 deg base. long tubes and dual ex with no cats and 2.5" ravin mufflers, air pump still there but no plumbing hooked up. Oh and home made plate kit.

So who wants to buy a complete 11 sec TPI ?? :hurray:

i would spray it harder if i had the capabilities. Next year with a carb and dual plane i'll put 250 to it in a two stage kit.

Scorp, i remembered that you told me those pistons were forged. When the motor comes out in November i'll let everyone know the condition of it.

knew there was a reason i believed a former GM factory worker to buy an '85 vette vs other 86+ years. :jester

Good job on the runs.. You have the TC locked up all the way through 2nd??
So from about 30MPH to xxx it is locked? Wouldn't your tranny burn out in no time like that?

Your 110 mph is an indication of your engines horsepower. Lowering ET's is (almost) as easy as fixing traction problems and perhaps the locking of the converter added to that as well. To add mph you must increase horspower. I had a computer simulation game a while back and there were a few different types of cars to race, with different "speed" transmissions in each level of car. Now this is only a simulation, but the results are fairly accurate. In the top fuel car you could run all out and hit each gear change right at or near redline and run mid 4's at 300+ mph. Bujt you could come out of the hole and short shift each gear bogging the motor and it would run like a 6 or 7 but still reach 300+. The results in the simulator were the same for each type of car, all the way down to the "stock" classes. MPH changed little for different shifting techniques althought the ET's really showed the way the car liked to be shifted.

Your results are impessive though, great job! :)

thanks

the converter locks up on it's own right after it shifts into 2nd gear and stays that way all the down the track.

it probably is hard on the trans, but racing in general is hard on the trans.

:flag I'm impressed ! Great job Mike ! Especially with that auto and 3.07 gears ! You have boosted my confidence in getting my car into the 12's.
(haven't taken it to a track yet)

Hmmmm. I think I know where I can get a really good deal right now on a 85 coupe w/ 4+3, all original. Hmmm.

Yeah, I think your right, all manuals should be Dana 44, (right?). What rear gear was the most common for manuals in '85 ?

The one I found is a white coupe with red interior. It was for sale about 3 1/2 years ago for $8500, but didn't sell and now just sits there at the bank. Wonder how cheap I could pick it up for now ? Might be a good daily driver if everything works good.

All manuals except for 1984 had Dana 44s in them. All 4+3 cars from 85-88 are 3.07 gears.

The 85's have the 'Night Rider' all led guages correct ?
Other than forged pistons, first D44 and first L98, is there anything else unique to the 85?
