Default Any recommendation?

What oil do you guys/gals use on the ZF tranny, rear axle and last bust not least, which leather cleaner gives the best result? I was looking into shop's ALLDATA and it says use SAE 30 on the trans. I plan on using the 10W-30 Mobil 1 synthetic. Has anyone use this in their trans? Bad? Good?

Thanks.
BTW, I have a Torch Red 95 ZR1 #323 :D

I believe that's the wrong oil. BMW sells a gear oil which is recommended by the manufacturer, ZF. Use the search feature and search archived topics in this section for ZF oil, or something like that, and you should find the correct oil. This question comes up often. Also, go to your local chevy dealer and get a bottle of posi additive to throw in the rear diff. While you are there, they should be able to tell you all the correct oils and capacities, but make sure that they are looking for your SPECIFIC car, as you indeed have a super rare, SUPER nice one!

Good luck!

I run 10w-30 Mobil 1 in my ZF and it's been fine.

If you haven't removed the drain and fill plugs yet, be prepared for a battle. :)

For the rear I will be putting in 75w-90 Mobil 1 plus some additive in the near future. You need a little pump to pump it out unless you remove the case.

Good luck...

There are two bolts on the trans to remove, both at 17mm hex. Remove the upper one before you remove the lower draining one.

When I changed my trans fluid I went with the GM synchromesh stuff. Don't use mobil 1 motor oil. The BMW oil is supposed to be pretty good, as well as the castrol stuff. I will have to look up the part number for the GM stuff. www.zfdoc.com might have the correct numbers. Spend a little extra on the correct oil, the trans will cost you about $2K to repair if you put the wrong stuff in.

Congrats on the ZR-1

Thanks for the info guys. After reading ZF51 Performance FAQ, I am going to use the BMW oil. I'll call the BMW dealer tomorrow and have it delivered. Ahh, the beauty of having an account with the dealerships.

Thanks again
