Vette jumps around when I hit a bump (SQUIRRELLY)
I have an 84 Vette that jumps around on the road if I hit a bump or ride on uneven road (construction areas). I had an alignment done and it tracks straight when I'm on a smooth road but any other type of road is no good. I believe my shocks are in need of replacement but I'm not sure how much impact that would have.
Thanks for your help. I really like this site and all the helpful opinions from a variety of people.

new shocks should do the trick. Also having wide tires tends to make the car follow the grooves or ruts in the road making it feel darty.

What air pressure do run in those tires? (like BAM mentioned) above.

I think that is a characteristic of these cars. Sometimes if I hit even a small bump, the rear feels like it hops sideways at the same time.

Characteristic of solid axle cars like mustangs and f bodies. Irs is supposed to eliminate this and give more traction over variations in the road.

Try driving SLOWER! Our cars don't handle bumps very well at 150! Just kidding... try new shocks, remember - Bilsteins ride hard but provide great performance, while GM Delco ride smooth but are way too soft for my driving habbits. Good luck!

Given the age of the car, check everything.
Could be bushings or bearings.
Mine used to hop around alot till I changed the alignment
Try zero toe in the front, 1/8 toe-in out back.
negative 0.5 degrees camber all the way around.
Stock is positive camber!

Re: Vette jumps around when I hit a bump (bmtdavis)
When I first bought it, it pulled hard to the right. After the alignment, it tracked straight on smooth roads but jumped around on every other type of road. I'm going to try new shocks (maybe Monroe Sensa-trac or KYB) and see if that helps.
Thanks to everybody for your help.

Re: Vette jumps around when I hit a bump (bmtdavis)
I recently had this same problem and a combination of alignment and shocks solved the problem. I had wicked severe rear wheel toe in. I also had loose rear shock mounts. Remember, the primary function of shocks is to keep wheels hard against the road...to counter the spring somewhat. So, theoretically the problem should be shocks.
