Will your L98 smoke the tires from a standstill (dry)
My new to me 87 L98 vert will not smoke the tires from a standstill in the dry. My old 85 did it no problem, before I go looking for a problem, I figured I'd verify that a stock L98 should make gobs of tire smoke like my old Vette.
So the question is: Will your stock L98 burn rubber?
Bill

my L83 making 205 hp and 290 ft/lbs (stock) will smoke em for about 4 seconds from a dead stop on dry ground, so i am certain that an L98 will do it better and longer.

My 88 convertable auto with a shift kit will only slip the tires a bit on the dry pavement...far from a smoky burnout  I figure I need more power or some heavy rain!!!

Check your RPO code inside your console. It starts with a G. This will tell you what rear end your car has. If it is 2.59 then that is more than likely your problem. Post the number and I can tell you what rear end you have in your car. Also, is it and AT?

When I first took delivery of my '88 in Mesa, AZ summer of '00 it would occasionally chirp the tires on an off-idle launch.
I didn't try a little brake stand so don't know if that would have lit them up in the Phoenix altitude & heat.
If you want to spin em up, do a little brake stand:
-depress the brake pedal
-bring up idle till just before the car creaps forward
-nail the accelerator just as you release the brake pedal.

Re: Will your L98 smoke the tires from a standstill (black88con)
My 1986 stock L98 will break the back end loose for up to between 8-10 seconds dry (don't need near full pedal) and is a demon in the rain. It has 115000 miles on it and I couldn't be happier, except for the voodoo fuel delivery system.....or is it the computer......or maybe.....
Regardless, it is the fastest stock equipped car I've ever seen from the US ( at least for the last 30 years or so).

Smoke show till you let off the gas. That was in stock form too.
Now its a little scary sometimes. Last November the tires were breaking free at 60-70mph on the highway on coooooold nights. Not exactly what you expect, but extra cold air HP and cold road/tires will do that.

Re: (scorp508)
Scorp508, I too experienced loss of traction between 50 and 65 last winter. Didn't think anyone would believe it. You know how it is to be startled and not be able to wipe the grin off of your face?

Here's a video of mine taking off from a stand still without bringing up the revs. I have 2.59 rear gears and auto tranny. This video was before I decided to do a rebuild at 190,000 miles.

Re: (65Z01)
At 70mph I cruise at 1890 RPMin 4th/overdrive. For "spirited driving" 2nd gear is good to 80mph. So I shift down 5 gears (4+3 tranny) to 2nd which drops me to 5300 RPM which is nearly where HP and Torque cross at about 320 of each at the wheels.

Mine does, and I only have a catback and K&N.
I was suffering some severe choking before I did my exhaust due to clogged cats, so there's probably something pretty minor that can be done to get yours to do it again.

In Stock form, my 87 with 3.07 (G92 option) on the stock 255/50 16 Eagle GS-C's would ROAST the tires. After I added an Air Intake and dual 2½" Exhaust, I also added brand new ZR1 17x9½" rims with 275/40 17 Potenza RE730's. When I tried to do the same thing, it had a little harder time, due to the bigger/brand new tires. Then I added a 2600rpm Yank Stealth Torque Converter and it's back to the same old tricks :D

According to my RPO codes my 86 has 2.59s and I can spin the tires on my auto from a stand still. I have sawblades with 275/40/17s on them.

My '93 with the LT1 would smoke them pretty good with the 2.59's from a standstill without using the brakes.
Now to go back to the original post, the '85 came from the factory with a higher stall T/C, so it probably hit harder off the line which is why you are experiencing the difference.

Re: Will your L98 smoke the tires from a standstill (BILLYD)
A lot may depend on your tires, temp and tire pressure. Different tire composition will hook differently. A softer, stickier tire will have a hard time spinning from a stop where a harder compound will be easier to smoke.

Re: Will your L98 smoke the tires from a standstill (BILLYD)
My 1989 L98 auto with performance axle(3.07?) was never modified in any way what-so-ever, not even an air filter upgrade.
When it was new it handled FULL throttle starts with no tirespin on clean dry pavement. I could even go full or nearly full throttle on most wet pavement.
Just before I sold the car in 1996, still with the original Goodyear Gatorbacks, it had become quite scary to drive. Wild burnouts at even part throttle were easy.
What was the difference?? TIRES!!!! The gatorbacks were notorious for getting hard with age and losing traction capability.
So the conclusion in my opinion; if you are experiencing tire spin on dry pavement with a STOCK L98 auto, you need tires!! If you fail to light'em and have good tires all is probably normal.

ya sure your car didn't say chevette instead of corvette :D  my realitively stock 89 vert will smoke the tires effortless from a stand still and can be put broadside if your not payin attention... that is running comp ta's or goodyears...actually the kumho's i have now are the best as far as sticking to the earth... any how if ya have a vette that can't even smoke the tires i would be wondering why  unless it's a late c-3
