What is the best brand of gas to use?

In CA, I don't think it matters. In San Diego, there is one distribution point with each brand (supposedly) adding their additives as it goes into the truck. In Antioch, you may be a little better off with the big boys in Martinez (Shell), Richmond (Chevron), Benecia (Exxon), and the smaller guy, Union 76 over in Rodeo. At least you got a shot at getting whatever's in it right from the refinery, but these guys will sell to each other too, depending on demand. And then you have the Bush edict dictating gasohol - Since that started, I haven't seen a single Chevron commercial, nor have I seen the 100 Octane Union 76 had at maybe 1 or 2 stations. Could it be that the 50 cents/gallon we pay over the nat'l. average is allowing them to make so much money that they decided not to advertise or put anything other than the corn syrup in it? I'm looking forward to the 2nd Qtr financials in August - the 1st were beyond obscene. Put premium in it, whatever is the cheapest, you shouldn't have any problems unless maybe it sits with a half empty tank for a couple of months.

Chevron has the SLOWEST pumps. I avoid them because of this.
Did they have an accident/lawsuit related to this?
Shell seems to have the fastest pumps.
I use 91 octane from all the major brands - can't tell any obvious difference.

Don't know of any "slow pump/accident" cases. Just the usual stuff: environmental - Lake Tahoe & S.F. Bay pollution cases along with human rights issues in 3rd world countries filed in Federal Court at one time or another. Maybe something local?

Any major brand is OK, slightly different additives but good quality. Avoid the supermarket, smaller corner stores, RaceTrack, and Diamond Shamrock, but especially the supermarkets. They tend to cause big problems with deposits and soot in the combustion chamber and on the valves. This will decrease power and can increase detonation problems.
I use Shell...because I work for Shell...and we do have great additives. If no Shell around I use ChevronTexaco, Conoco, ExxonMobil. If none of those around, I punt.

I don't put much faith in better brands of gas.
Gas is gas as long as the octane is sufficient. Besides a tank goes pretty...

I switch between brands about every 3 tanks. That way if one of the additives doesn't keep things completly clean maybe the other 2 will.

Doesnt really matter they all are pretty much the same they have to be to stay in buisiness. I have 2 things I go by.
1. a station that has alot of traffic. (Fresh Fuel)
2. A station that does not charge you for air and water.
I will keep going if I see that stupid vending machine air and water rip off piece of S#!^ :cuss :cuss :cuss
Here in Nawlins that gives you pretty much one choice Shell.

Oh man, I hate to be a bugaboo but here goes. I do computer software consulting, and did an 18-month assignment for a large fuel wholesaler. Much to my non-belief I learned that USUALLY fuel is distributed - via wholesalers - at common distribution points, which may contain pipeline endpoints for numerous fuel companies. [What I was told was that the govt. had these set up during WWII - as common distribution points would be easiest to defend againt sabotoge. ] So, while the Big Boys can have their own refineries, pipelines, and fuel trucks, it's just as likely that the fuel in their stations came from another refiner-whoever had enough volume available at the best price on a given day. There's a term for when they add their own, proprietary additives to the fuel when it's pumped into the trucks for delivery - 'Splash Blending'. So, it's pretty much a commodity...I realize, of course, that doesn't take into account the condition of a given gas station's tanks or pumps...

You guy's are correct, most fuel comes from central distribution points. The only difference in gasoline from one vendor to another are the particular additives they put in the tanker when it is loaded.
