Default LT4 Hot cam in a L98?

heres the setup im looking at:

-siamesed TPI base
-AS&M runners
-LT4 hot cam
-1.5 roller rockers
-home ported L98 heads

would this combo work on a TPI motor with intake and exhaust mods? is the Hot cam to radical for a LTR setup, or would the reduced rocker ratio make it work? with a siamesed base, the engine should make power in the operating range of the cam (1500-5500). im looking for an alternative to the expensive ZZ9 cam from TPIS, which is suppossed to be one of the best cams for TPI.

I thought that l98s came with 1.5 rocker arms?

I think the cam is too big for the TPI setup.

I have the hot cam in my ZZ4 and it is awesome. I have 1.6 rollers though and it revs up quick and idles nicely a custom prom from ski_down_it. Before his chip I was running rich.

Doug -

How is the powerband on your car?
How much low end did you sacrifice?
Is it what could be considered a "nice" car to drive on street or is it too peaky?
What is your intake setup? (sorry didn't check your sig)

Thanks for info. I have ZZ4 cam for '91 I am installing now, but could be persuaded to go otherwise.

Thanks,

-Z

How is the powerband on your car?
I have only put a few miles on her since the swap, but she really starts to pull at 3k. My gears are 2.59, need to get that fixed and a 2400 stall converter I think are my next mods.

How much low end did you sacrifice?
Hard to tell, with my gearing, my low end has always been crappy. It feels stronger now, just gearing that stinks I think.

Is it what could be considered a "nice" car to drive on street or is it too peaky?
I think she is smooth as butter, no lope to my idle. But with the 1.6 rollers she likes to wrap up quick. That is when the beast comes out, when you get on her. She snarls really nice then!

What is your intake setup? (sorry didn't check your sig)
I am currently running a home siamesed and ported TPI. Hooker 2149's, and the hooker Y pipe, gutted cat to flowmasters. She idles smoothly and fairly quietly. When you give her the pedal, she snarls and lets you know she is about business. I haven't had her over 4k RPM's yet as I am still breaking her in. After she gets back from the paint shop, I plan on getting my 500 miles on her ASAP, and then gonna really uncork her.

Thanks for info. I have ZZ4 cam for '91 I am installing now, but could be persuaded to go otherwise.

Thanks,

-Z
I was actually advised with the ZZ4 crate motor to swap out for 1.6 rollers and the LT4 hotcam as it would really work well with the TPI. I can say that my initial impression would have to concur with that advice. Now to find a DANA 44 I can afford.......... :D

This is an interesting comment - what do you mean by 'too big'? Forgive my ignorance here, but I don't understand what you mean.

I think Vader is right. The cam won't be coming on line well till the intake is just about used up. Mine is pulling like hell at 7K (don't believe me ask ShawnZR1 he drove Arisa this past weekend). The TPI intake will be dead WAY before then.

:iagree: I was on the dyno a couple weeks ago. My power peak was at ~6500 rpm...call it 6400 and change...anyway, I did my pulls to 6800. A TPI will never rev high enough to take advantage of the duration (and hence rpm).

The TPI is the limiting factor . I ported/siamesed the plenum, runners and base and I really don't feel much pull after 4800 rpms. That is comaped to the stock TPI cutting out at 4400 rpm's. I can't comment too much on the hotcam b/c my car isn't fully tuned yet.

I think the intake duration of the cam is a little steep for a LTR intake. I would keep it around 210. Change the intake then the cam would be fine.

my brother has the hot cam in his 86, but he has the SR, along with the trick flow 23*, and 3.73 at the back. since his is an auto (2200 stall conv), it idles around 950-1000 instead of the original 600-800.

but it runs really well.

let me coment on this. Im running this cam with simaesd intake and stock runners, 1,6rrs, lpe 113 heads, headers. The car pulls like a raped ape from 3000 RPM to 4800rpm, and its still on stock chip. I dont dare to take the car abow 5000rpm due to my stock chip. Did I loose and torque down low? well I cant get traktion in first at all, the same with the old cam. So i guess I cant tell??! Did I loose any torque in the middle rpm power band, yes here I can feel a slight decrease in power, BUT that can also be that my car is running super rich right now.
Im I going to get 400hp out of this setup, NO! Thats not my goal. Will I be abel to run high 12s, im sure of that, when its tuned! Thats my goal...
Next winter is a LT1 intake going to be installed.
So in my book its a good combination if you plan on replace the intake later. It still make ALOT of more power then a stock L98.
Och and this cam is workin real nice with the 6spd.
