Coolant flush/fill -- now temps about 8* higher
I flushed and filled my coolant last week when I did my front seal surgery. The old coolant was brownish :nono: . I refilled with 50/50 mix, 6 coolant tablets (crushed), and a bottle of Water Wetter. Oh yea, new water pump, too. The car used to drive at 194* on the highway in 6th, about 65 mph. Now at the same speed and gear, it levels off at 202*. So I asked -- WTF? . Could it be that the water pump is not GM, but a parts store brand? Or maybe I did not bleed the coolant enough and there is still air in the lines? I don't have any leaks and the level of the coolant in the tank is perfect. :lurk:

a couple of thoughts...
1) air still in the system
2) the 50/50 mix!!! antifreeze does nothing for cooling, just protects from freezing, protects from corrosion and ups the boiling point, but does nothing for lowering the temp of the coolant. I prefer a 70/30 water/af mix. I use that, plus water wetter and my vette runs at about 192 when moving.

Check your pressure cap, sometimes its overlooked and can cause the temp to run higher. :steering:

If the water was brownish then you were probably running mostly water. You might be due for a chemical flush it it was running with too little coolant for a long time.
Mine dropped about 8-9 degrees when I went to 70/30 mix with water wetter.

I've always used almost all water in my cooling system. In february I decided to have it flushed and have antifreeze put in on a trip to Missouri a day before the temp dropped below 0. On the way back home, and ever since, my coolant has been at least 20 degrees hotter!! Antifreeze makes a huge difference.

Maybe the flush loosened something up. If something did come loose (Corrosion) this have hung up in the thermastat to cause it to stay open.

An open thermostat would cause cooler temps and longer time to operating temperature.

Just to let you know, I, too, did the water pump change when swapping out the opti. I replaced the hoses and did the TB bypass (lost one of the bleed valves) and really flushed her out. I used 2 gallons of the green stuff from Prestone and the rest distilled water. I haven't put the pellets in yet as there is an ongoing debate about their use. Before she ran between 200-210 and 230 in stop and go traffic in the summer. After, she runs at 185-200 and haven't been in traffic, yet. I bought a new GM pump (AC Delco) which came with a new stat (180) and didn't use water wetter. The way I see it, the only difference between you and I was the brand of pump, water wetter, and the pellets. Is your engine stock? Mine is, except for RRs and headers. I'm assuming you cleaned between the radiator and condenser.

If you now have a higher percentage of antifreeze vs water than you had before it could be the cause of the higher temp.
With such a small change in temp I would worry too much about it.
