how much HP can dana 36 with 3.54s handle???
OK I got the gears in and love them ... now I want to slightly mod the car
which is stock....exhaust
roller rockers
cam ?????
but I don't want to do the dana 44 conversion so how much HP do you think see can handle without having to change rear .
P.S. oh yea what would you do next as a mod on a stock A4 LT1 with 3.54s

You're next move should be to get the car to "breathe" better...I assume you have a K & N filter with a cut lid...if not, do that immediately...then put on some long tube headers...at the same time as you install headers, make your exhast system less restrictive...I don't know the emissions laws in your state but, if you can, remove the cats and pre-cats and run stright pipes to your mufflers...otherwise go with the least restrictive exhaust system you can that will pass emissions... good luck

HP does not break things, Torque does.
Youre ok until youre pushing 60' times below 1.7-1.8. You can safely do hotcam, RR and such. But if you go to the track be careful with it.

With an auto converted to a manual with a dana 36, how high rpm can you launch and how much power can you make till you get 1.7-1.8 60ft times?

Hmm, would 330RWTQ( Guessing) with 3.54's and 2500rpm launch be too much for it? OR Should I ask this in the Drag Racing section and see what they say? Maybe someone on that side might have tried this and knows how much it can take?

Id imagine you could get your 60' down to the 1.5 range with a stock car, but with slicks, but i dont know for sure.

 WOW, 1.5's so the people that get 2.0's+ just dont know how to launch then is that correct?

No, not necessarily...a major factor in 60' times is tires...remember the more the tires stick the more the stress on your driveline...with a Dana 36 and sticky tires out back you will bust the 36 at some point...it's only a question of when...I've heard of guys who got 100 passes with that setup...I've also heard of guys who busted up their 36 on the first pass with stickies..

But if you have slicks and get 2.0+ times then you might need to work on your launch technique.

Re: how much HP can dana 36 with 3.54s handle??? (golfboy1 + vader86)
SO basically, it depends on how hard the driver launches and what rpm he dumps the clutch, tires and how much TQ he can get to the tires which all adds up to more stress on the driveline.
Also if your already rolling, say 10 or even 5mph, is the stress a whole lot lower then as if you were to launch?

I got my D36 down to 1.7 range....that is the pic in my sig, not sure if you could even get 1.6s with a stock car....that is really crankin out of the hole.
This doesn't mean that you put 5.xx gears in it either. Talking practicle gears for cruising etc. But even with say 4.10s I still don't think it would do it.

Re: how much HP can dana 36 with 3.54s handle??? (ski_dwn_it)
We've been revisiting this subject A LOT lately... The D36 is NOT as weak as everyone seems to think it is, but, nor is it indestructable. Like anything else on a high performance vehicle if you abuse it you're going to introduce additional stress loads that "may" cause it to fail. Note that I did not say "will" cause it to fail... Like everyone else, I've seen D36's break on the first pass with moderately sticky tires (like drag radials) and then I've seen D36's take pass after pass of dragstrip abuse on true slicks and keep coming back for more. Like any other man made component there are good ones and bad ones. But since you asked, my wife's D36 is still alive (over 100 passes and counting) after I rebuilt it; and that's with 11.70 ET's on ET Streets...It has also taken a couple of passes in my 1990 6spd (I installed it after I rebuilt it to see how quickly I could break it)...All of which were in the high 10 range. That's a 5500 rpm clutch dump launch by the way... It didn't break, it hasn't broken...Yet....

PS- FWIW: I've also got a conventional D36 straight axle in my Jeep...That thing has taken more abuse than anything and other that to change the fluid it's never been down.
