The distributor cap has a square section on the drivers side where the power/tach wires plug in. the # 1 plug wire needs to be plugged in to the second "post" in a clockwise rotation from this square block. This is the # 1 spark plug location. One off in either direction will cause the car to do what you described above.
The square block should end up between #7 & #2.

Thank you very much. I will check the car and hopefully that will be the problem.

All small block chevy's are the same, from 1955 to 1998.

(from the begining) my car had a miss fire in it. i the changed the fuel filter and it made it a little better but the miss remained. so today i replaced the cap and rotor and it got a little worse. then i began listening to differant web sites and i changed my firing oder 5 times and tryed to start the car. a couple of times the car would start but the car would miss even worse. so now we went back and followed the maunal and now the car will turn on the die right away and i don't know if i messed up the timing or what. :banghead:

Unless you turned the distributor, you did not change the timing...
Pull the cap again and double check everything. Also check the coil and the connections to it.
