I am sure you would indeed save some weight. There is (are?) I think 2 folks on here that have a LS1 in a C4. One I think is a 84...his car is pretty sweet.

But, I have to imagine, really unless it is a cross fire you are talking about, then you would almost be better off in every case just to mod existing engine. (Unless you came upon an *almost* free LS1

Try doing a search on here.....I KNOW there is someone, but have been off the forum for about 6 mos, so I have forgotten a lot of folk's names.

It would be cheaper and easier to modify the current engine, the LS1 is entirely different, the wiring would be a nightmare.

i just did my term paper on GENI vs GEN II vs GEN III 350s

The LS1 block is made heat-treated aluminum in order to address weight issues. The new block weighs 107 lb. compared to the Gen II's 160 lb. block (Anderson, 2003). Fifty seven pounds, especially off the front end on a rear wheel drive vehicle is a very significant weight savings(Williams, 2003).

Althought the LS1 is abosolutly superior to the LT1 and L98-
money and knowlage are still king in this sport. The amount of money needed to get that thing in there would be twice what a bad butt LT1/L98 would cost.

The LS1 has a nicer firing order and ignition setup though :D

:iagree: 100%

The other issue - dimentions. The LS1 and the LT1/L98/L83 do not even come close for bolt up.

The motor mounts are different...

I suspect, that with enough welding, anything can be done.

for the price differance, just get some blower pistons and boost 8psi

lets see an LS1 flow 8psi :smash:

all things also being equal-
our (LT1) reverse cooled heads are really nice for boost
the 10.4:1 compression is not :nonod:

I know i'm going upto 12.5:1 :smash:

if anyone is intrested, i can copy paste the LS1 section of my paper.
its really a basic paper. I skimmed the Gen I , II and III in just under 20 pages so dont be expecting every detail :p

I just finished the LS1 Swap into a 85.

Mine is Wiseco forged pistons, eagle rods, stock crank, LPE-Stg2 Heads, LS6 intake, Thunderracing 227/230 cam, TNT 300 horse n20 kit, TH350 /w 3800 converter, Dana 44 3.07 gears, 28x13.5 ET streets on Prostars and ZR1's /w 315/35/17 drag radials for the street (and i get about 20 mpg in town).

Im 425 rwhp on motor (havent ran at track, expecting mid-high 10's on motor @ 125-130 mph @ 2900 lb race weight)
And my TNT Kit is jetted for 300 rwhp, so 725 rwhp, 20 miles per gallon, and i can let my girlfriend drive it to work all week if need be.

725 rwhp @ 2900 = 8.80 ET @ 156 Mph...... i hope its somewhere in the mid-low 9 area.

What im REALLY hoping and praying for, is that $6000 it cost me to build this setup.

If you guys have any questions on the swap, ive swapped ls1's in several different cars now, and im completely familar with the C4 corvette swap. You can email any quesitons, to LS1Tuner@hotmail.com

There are two people on here that have done the LS1 swap. I cant remember the other guy did it on a 84.

Before i did the swap i would have agreed with the other people that replied that it was going to be too difficult. I COMPLETELY Disagree now.

You can perform the swap for approx $3000 including the LS1.
My 85 is a full weight car,, full interior, with 5-pt roll bar (removeable side bar). The car weighs 2700 lbs now after the swap. I think it saved about 300 lbs total after it was all said and done from the iron headed l98 that came in the 85.

We junked all the smog equipment on my C4 swap and all the A/C equipment, as well as the A/C box etc (but you can leave it in)

I paid $1500 for a complete motor minus wiring harness on EBAY. Get a camaro/firebird one

1) You use the stock vette motor mounts, bolted to a simple adapter plate (I sell the C4 adapter motor mount plate for $150. No fabbing nessesary, this bolts the LS1 in the exact same location as a small block, and makes driveline length stay the same

2) You have to use the alternator bracket from a C5 Corvette (dealer sells this for $45)

3) I used MAC Headers for a 00-02 F-body, they are a direct bolt-in, no clearancing or fabrication work. (my cost is $250 on those)

4) Painless Wiring LS1 harness (only works on 98 PCM's) $450. No fabbing nessesary! its so easy to hook up its almost scary. Just unbolt the wiring harness going through the firewall, take out the stock l98 computer wiring, and run the new harness through the firewall, this took us a total of 2 hours to install and mount the computer under passenger side dash.

5) Cannot run a/c compressor it hits the passenger side frame

6) Get a 4L60E Tranny for a LS1 if you want to go that route, that should be no more than 600-800 bucks. I personally went to a TH350 for more weight savings. Its a direct bolt up to the LS1 motor. No fabbing here either.

7) Youll have to make your own radiator hoses and some little stuff, but wiring up the ignition and wiring is pretty cake.

I think i have about 10 hours of labor TOTAL in the whole swap.

Thanks for the replies. My mechanic told me it wouldn't be worth the trouble ($$$$). Losing A/C is a deal-breaker. I live in AZ. Guess its back to LT1 mods, or spring for a C5. :boxing

just buy you a dart aluminum block. it'll take just about anything you can throw at it and bolt right up.

Are these long tubes or short tubes? What about the rest of the exhaust? Did you have to have a custom exhaust made up?

Also the other guy that has done this it TracerX

coming right over guys-
this paper was VERY shallow. I wrote it, it was like 50+ pages and i had to trim it down to 20ish :nonod:

I'm gonna send it over in a text format, and there is one typo.
the small block went to a 1 peice rear main seal, not 2 in the 80s

Hi,
I am in the process of installing an LS1 in my 88 coupe. I would like a pair of the MAC headers mentioned for $250. Everywhere else I have looked wants a lot more for them.
Taking initial measurements it looks like the 00 z-28 LS1 I have will fit including the air compressor but the experienced folks say it will interfere with the passenger frame rail. How do they do it in the C5? is it totally different? Thanks.

That costs more than a complete running LS1.

It's all aluminum. I think there is an iron-block LS1 for trucks though.

These are mid length almost longtubes. I have a set of Edelbrock Drag LS1 headers on order that i think will fit, but for now the MAC's work great.

I already had exhaust that had on my 383 (i had hooker 2151 headers).

I just paid an exhaust shop to cut my flanges off and run it to the collectors, It cost me 60 bucks.

I installed the ls1 with the f-body accessory bracketry,

the a/c compressor will not fit.

Street and performance sells bracketry that will move it to places it will fit, or you can just custom fab something. The frame rails in a c5 are nothing like a c4.
