Default Simple and effective center console lid repair

I made this repair to my center console lid about six months ago and never got around to posting it. I saw a thread recently about finding replacement lids and thought I should post this.

I used weatherstrip adhesive and wrapped the lid with masking tape to hold it in place until it dried. The repair worked great, six months later it is still holding. The only thing I would have done differently is I would have put a 1' ruler or other straight edge along the side of the lid I had glued before applying the tape. That way, the edge of the lid would have been perfectly straight instead of being a little wavy. Other than that, it is good as new!

Ah, great minds..., nice work.

I used a similar method on mine a copla years ago and still holding; much prefered to buying a new one.

Ha!! I did the exact same thing two nights ago. Instead of weatherstip adhesive, I used the Dow expanding, insulating foam (the type that's water based and expands minimally, ~10%) that I bought at Lowes. Mine looks great also, I'll see how it holds up to the summer heat.

Thanks for the tip, I need to do this to mine. I'll use the ruler or straight edge tip you suggested.

Not a bad idea.. I'll try it myself. Every console lid is going to be different as far as repairs. If it don't turn out the way I hope it does then i'll just buy a new one. Thanks for the tip though.

i thought it was for the lid button ( the thing u push back to open the lid). When the spring broke in mine i shoved crumpled bits of newspaper in the place of the little spring. Works better than the spring.!

Yes, if your lid becomes too warped it probably won't work as well. I fixed mine before it got really bad. I didn't even really notice the edge peeling up, I just noticed it was getting harder to open the lid and I looked to see why. The problem is probably caused by all the weight put on the lid as you lean on it to remove and install the roof panel.

Glasman66, my latch broke early last year; since I couldn't find a replacement for the OEM flat spring I used RTV to pot two small coil springs in place.

Recently I noticed that MAD sells the spring for some C4 console lids; I guess timing realy does count.

I bought a coil spring at Home Depot for about .25 and cut it to length inserted it where the flat spring was and it has worked great ever since. The coil won't snap in two like the flat spring did. :D

Great idea. Mine was in perfect shape, but has just recently started to catch on the hinge side and pull the cover out of place. I tried adjusting it like 3 times, but it still catches. I dont open it all the way anymore, at least not until i fix it.
