Default Which gas octane is better?

91, 92, 93 or higher for a stock vette?

Our cars don't have some sort of "knock sensor" to adjust for timing, do they?

the lowest octane without degrading performance is best.

our cars have knock sensors which will cut timing by up to 10* when knock is detected.

i use super, 92 or 93, don't remember, because 89 causes ping in my car

edit: probably would be better to say, the lowest octane without inducing knock is best

Its debateable which octane rating is best for YOUR car, each is different enough that it might not register knock counts with 91-93 octane. But with an LT1, i would be running 92 all the time.

And we all have knock sensors.

I try to run 92 or higher if I can but I was just wondering what a completely stock vette should run with.

The book says, use premium. Thats what I do (completely stock, except for LT4 roller rockers). Premium for me is 93 octane.

Whatever octane you can run full throttle and get no pinging.

ouch... I could go off on a tangent, about gas prices, and the fact that we could be paying a lot less now, if certain things were done, but I wont....

I noticed today though, that, 93 has gone up to (in its lowest price, with quality) 1.87/gallon

The label on my 92's gas filler trim piece says Premium Fuel Recommended. I have run both 91 and 92 octane with no problem. I did try a mid-range 89 once while on a trip and while the car seemed to run fine, the check engine light came on after about 30 miles of freeway driving. I never checked the code, but it was the only time I got that light after a week on the road. Disconnected the battery to clear everything and no light since.

I'll always use premium!!

The best I can find here at the pump is 91 octane for my stock LT1. It (seems) to run ok.

What I'd like to know is if it is detrimental to run something like the 100 octane unleaded that is available at a couple places? Is there any performance gain in doing this, or is it just a waste of money?

Karl

I run a blend of 93 octane and either 114 leaded or 100 unleaded, depending what my intentions are. :D I go with a 60/40 mixture.

I can run on 93 with some knock sense retard at full throttle. It runs MUCH better on Sunoco 94. I'll bet it would give INSANE power on av gas.

These cars will give as much ignition advance as they can stand until they sense knock. They will give more powerr on better stuff. But you can't get the 94 octane everywhere, and for cruising it's not worth $.20 per gallon more. Worth it at the track.

But what is the limit, where additional octane is nothing more than overkill? Is there some way to calculate what the max octane would be for a given setup, which would be useful for performance?

Like should I use straight 100oct unleaded in my stock LT1 if I'm going to do some serious driving, or would a 50-50 mix (or less) be just as efficient?
